Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

Since the area with all the informational signs was bound to get a bit clogged up, even more tables and chairs had been set up on the lawn, in a slightly different spot.

"Maybe it can come back to me if and when I graduate." She liked this thought.

"That's a long way off," Tahiri noted, in a tone that implied it could stay that way.

"A year," she pointed out. Not that Jaina was sure she'd stay that long. A year actually didn't seem that long here, but when that was two years back home...

"A lot can happen in a year . . . and what do you mean if?" Tahiri asked.

Jaina shrugged. "I'm not entirely sure I'm going to stick around after the summer," she admitted. "Too much going on back home that I'm missing. It all depends on what happens the next couple months, I think."

Tahiri didn't look a little crestfallen about that possibility. Really. "I guess it drives you crazy being out of the action as much as you are already."

Another shrug. "I went nearly a month desperately playing catchup because things kept happening here. And when John goes, my excuses to stay run pretty thin. Three months here is about six months back there, though, and a lot can happen in that time."

"Tell me about it. Every time I get an update I practically get a headache trying to process it all, and I don't have half the responsibilities you do." Still not looking unhappy with the prospect, really. Really.

"Hey. Nothing's decided yet," Jaina told her, noticing how really unhappy she didn't look.

Tahiri managed a slight grin. "Good, because now that Gavin's gone I have to bug you about flying stuff."

Jaina opened her mouth, then remembered that her Tahiri had her own squadron now. "That's probably not a bad idea."

And if she'd mentioned anything about that, this Tahiri would have started laughing. "I signed up for your grandfather's workshop, but from some of the stuff I keep hearing I get the feeling I need more practice than that, so I'd appreciate it." She paused. "Hey, Jaina?"

"Yeah?" She was a little wary of where she was going to go next.

Tahiri shrugged awkwardly. "I'm sorry, you know. About . . . that whole thing."

She softened a bit, because that did mean a lot. Especially since she was under the impression Ben hadn't really cared."Don't worry about it," she said, which was more like her way of accepting the apology.

Tahiri relaxed a fraction. "It was never about not trusting you, you know," she ventured.

"You don't have to explain," Jaina told her. "It's over, it's done... we're good there."

That was the first really genuine and unguarded smile Tahiri had given Jaina in a long time. "Good to know. I hate being on your bad side."

"We'll just save my bad side for those who deserve it," she said, smiling back a little in return.

"I like that policy," Tahiri decided.
