"I realize some of you may have had to bring your children to class today," Steve said, "and that, yes, this is an unfortunate turn of events. However, I have set up a play area with art supplies--" on a tarp "--over in that corner. I apologize that it is not soundproof, but look at it this way: they'll be some other you's problem soon." Or them in the future, in which case it was more like a reprieve than a carte blanche he was giving them.

"So, it's the last week before your final, and I thought it would be a good idea to have a sort of open forum, where everyone can ask any questions they might have about anything related to the class, and I and your classmates will do our best to answer. You can also use this time to review for the final if you haven't really got any questions. How does that sound?" Steve continued without waiting for an answer, with the relentless, merciless cheer of a man who'd cleaned marshmallow off every single surface in his kitchen recently. "Good. Let's get started."

Lou had been colouring but then she was listening and she had to raise her hand. "What do you do if someone is fake?" she asked, looking very serious.

"He's not fake," Edmund frowned at her, trying not to involve the whole class as she had.

"How do you know?" Lou asked innocently. "He might be an imposter."

"Because," he replied, lowering his head so he could look her square in the eye, "I know everything."

Lou looked distinctly unimpressed. "You don't. You didn't even know who I was."

"How do you know that? I could have been pretending," Edmund replied evenly. "And how do you know you're not the fake one?"

"Because," Lou said, rolling her eyes. "I'm me. And you weren't pretending. Your eyes always do that thing where you're trying not to blink a lot when you don't know."

"You're absolutely right," Edmund said suddenly. "You are you. You're definitely your mother's daughter." After a moment, he added, "but Michael still isn't fake."

This really wasn't a discussion he wanted to be having in front of the whole class, but he was somewhat mollified by the knowledge that they were no doubt dealing with their own child-related problems at the moment and knew what it felt like.

"He could be a demon," she pointed out, not quite mollified.

"He's not a demon. He's technically your half-brother." He'd had a few days to process the 'these are my children somewhere some time' thing and was, by this stage, rolling with it.

"I don't wanna be Queen with him!" she argued. "He's stupid!"

"What has he done other than be a perfect gentleman to you?"

Lou frowned. "He has not!"

"What did he do that was ungentlemanly?" Edmund raised an eyebrow.

"Said you weren't my daddy!" she protested.

"And you're saying I'm not his." Which was technically accurate. "So I think you're even."

She frowned at him, knowing there wasn't any point in arguing with Daddy when he was like this.

"Yes, Daddy," she said, attempting to look completely innocent and not at all like she was just thinking of another argument.

"What do you mean 'fake' sweetheart?" Steve asked her.

She shot a quick glance at Michael. "He says he's someone he can't be cause he doesn't exist," she said with a nod. "So he's gotta be fake."

"Well, maybe he's somebody you didn't know existed before," Steve said. "Or maybe he's from an alternate reality. That's happening a lot this weekend. He might not be fake at all."

Or he could be a Skrull.

Definitely a Skrull.

"How can someone not exist before and exist now?" Lou asked curiously.

Because Wanda Maximoff had gone crazy? "Sometimes the multiverse plays tricks on us," Steve said.

She looked up at him with big eyes. "Why?"

"I don't know," Steve admitted. "You'd have to ask a supergenius."

"Who's a supergenius?" Lou asked, looking around like she was ready to go ask right now - which she probably was.
