Movie Appreciation: Week 9, Period 3 (Fri. 3/13)

There'd been a marathon of disaster movies on late Thursday night. It was as if cable television thought the world was going to end and the audiences needed to be prepared. Which led to Ronon's selection of film clips for this week's class. He was mostly amused because it was so rare in Pegasus for a world to be destroyed by something other than Wraith invasion. Or McKay.

Once students had assembled in the Danger Shop-turned movie auditorium, he began his 'lecture.' "A decade ago, movie makers seemed pretty sure Earth was gettin' destroyed by a giant meteor or comet." He played the infamous scene of destruction to prove his point. "That was meta for Deep Impact. Today, we're gonna watch meta for Armageddon and talk about suspension of disbelief." Wikipedia was becoming Ronon's friend for this movie analysis stuff. "So, do you accept the premise and science of the movie and enjoy it without delving deep or do you rip it up by thinkin' too much and ruin the unrealistic special effects for everyone else? Let's watch."

[OOC: My head hurts so I give you links for Armageddon here! The Launch. The part where I prove I have no soul. More proof.]

Fiery bits of rock falling from the sky and destroying a city? Consider John pleased to be in class today.

Angela wouldn't have said she was a particular disaster movie fan, but that wasn't going to stop her from slouching back comfortably in a seat as usual to enjoy the fact she got to watch movies for class. That was never going to stop being amazing.

Peyton made herself comfortable and settled in to watch the disaster movie.

Romeo could always watch things blowing up and cities being laid to waste. He was deeply absorbed in the movie.

Gwynn was staring in rapt fascination at the movie as it played.

She was a fan of disaster movies, who knew?

Firekeeper wasn't paying much attention. Instead, she was brooding thinking hard about her previous class. Magic, why did it always have to be magic? Too much trouble.

[ooc: omg can't stop editing.]

Dinah kinda loved this movie. It was so dumb in some places. Plus great one-liners.

Popcorn migh be TK'd at the screen at various points.

Penelope tried not to gasp. It was a terrible disaster movie and she wondered if that could ever truly happen?

Claudia was totally distracted by the hot guys. This...was not hugely shocking, no.

Peter watched, trying to imagine what he'd do if it was the end of the world.

Robin had to cover his eyes during the more intense parts, but he enjoyed the adventure aspects.

Sam had loved this kind of movie way more before he had to stop an alien robot from destroying the Earth.

"You have to suspend disbelief for any movie," Tony said. "It's the director's job to create this world that you get caught up in and if you believe it 'til the credits roll, he's done it right." He considered the film they'd been watching. "This one's all right, I think, once you accept the premise. I think all the flag-waving's kinda excessive, but maybe that's 'cause I'm not American."

"Those effects looked pretty real to me." Robin said. "But I am from the 80's."

"Why would I have to suspend disbelief?" Sam asked. "This could totally happen, hello! This island proves anything can happen!" Sam might be freaking out a little.

Tony believes in vampires, demons, aliens and other dimensions. Accepting movie logic is not a problem.

TRUFAX: My cousin once watching Armageddon twenty-nine times over nine days.

I boggle and flail; sure, it's fun and all, but I can't understand how someone can like it that much, not when Deep Impact is right there and SO MUCH BETTER. ;)
