Movie Appreciation: Week 8, Period 3 (Fri. 3/6)

After taking a nice nap, err, meditating for a period, Ronon was ready to focus on movies. He'd come across something very interesting during the week while he was recovering from the spa the cruise. That thing would be silent film.

And so Ronon stood at his podium and hit play to display a very low-class PowerPoint presentation on the large theater screen behind him. Instrumental music accompanied the presentation wherein students were shown a silent film and told to speak to each other via notecards. No oral communication would be permitted. And those who couldn't help talking would be glared at.

While students mingled for discussion, questions flashed on the screen: Q1: How do you like the music? Q2: What did you do over break?

[1. The film is embedded in the presentation, I only linked it again in case the presentation doesn't work for some reason.
2. Click 'Start Presentation' to see the slideshow!
3. NO TALKING.
4. There are plenty of notecards and markers for all.
5. Sorry to people who can't read/write, miming and gestures are encouraged.]

Angela snagged several of those notecards, and contemplated if she could illustrate her answers, rather than write them. It would really be more interesting.

Sokka showed her a card full of Chinese characters. In Cantonese, or if you were from his world, it said "My rodent could write better music."

Right.

Angela arched an eyebrow. While she was in fact half Chinese, she barely understood a word, and could read even less.

On her own card, she scrawled her very own completely made up characters, and held it up for Sokka to see with a smirk. There was really no telling what she could be saying here.

Sokka looked at her card, considered it thoughtfully, and then gave her a thumbs-up. His next card said, still in Chinese, "I am failing to communicate effectively."

Notecards in hand, John wondered if handwriting would count on these things. If so, communication might be near impossible.

Firekeeper... had no idea what it was she was supposed to be doing, since the discussion questions were just lines of meaningless shapes. The no-talking part was easy enough to figure out, though, so she was just gonna sit here for now.

Dinah drew a smiley face on her notecard and held it up for Firekeeper to see. Then gave her a thumb's up. She cocked her head and waved to Blind Seer, and wrote: Liked it? Then held it up for him to see.

She tilted her head at the smiley face, not entirely sure what it was supposed to mean.

"I think," Blind Seer commented, "it is meant to be a representation of a human face."

Firekeeper considered the drawing once again. "I see it now,"

Blind Seer padded closer to Dinah to see if he could decipher the words she'd written. He could, though the answer that first sprung to mind was a bit too complicated to convey given the language barrier. So he settled for a nod after the human fashion.

Dinah grinned, knowing that Blind Seer and Blysse could still talk, which was technically cheating but hey, if Mr. Dex didn't know, they wouldn't get into trouble for it. She pointed back at the movie screen for Blysse, and put her eyebrows up questioningly. Then held up another card with a frowny face on it, holding both out to Blysse to choose.

Then, to Blind Seer, she wrote: Fun break while we were gone?

Really, if she could think of a way to get an answer beyond yes/no, she'd come up with more interesting questions.

Robin held up a card: YES. THEY SHOULD HAVE PLAYED SOMETHING SUSPENSFUL.

Claudia's eyes went wide. "FROG!!" she wrote on her card.

In case he'd forgotten or something.

...at least she didn't throw anything?

John stared and wrote on his card. "Yes. Two perky."

Sokka replied with a card that said "The music was too perky."

Bender started folding one of his cards into a dart, folding over and over until he got a really sharp point. The screen was too big a target to be any kind of challenge.

Marco grabbed a few note cards and held one up that he had written "They left things out and edited them wrong!" on.

Re: Write [3/6]

Sokka waved a card in his direction that said "WORD!!!!!" on it.

Rodney grabbed a handful of notecards as he had the urge to write a dissertation on Lucas' vision. He did at least answer the questions first.

Although the music was representative of the silent film genre, it was completely inappropriate for Space Battles. A better choice would have been to use selections from Williams' score.

I went on a cruise.

Sokka wrote "I M SMRT" on a card and snuck up behind Rodney to try to tape it to his back.

Re: Write [3/6]

[identity profile] mrodneymckay.livejournal.com 2009-03-07 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
Rodney was writing another card on the lack of text after the introduction when he felt something on his back. He turned around to see Sokka behind him and raised his hand and his eyebrows in order to ask 'what?'

Re: Write [3/6]

[identity profile] sarcasm-guy.livejournal.com 2009-03-07 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
Sokka shrugged and looked around, pretending to try to figure out what Rodney was on about.

Sam grabbed some notecards and started writing. Which would work out better if his handwriting was legible, but it really, really wasn't.
