Movie Appreciation: Week 8, Period 3 (Fri. 3/6)

After taking a nice nap, err, meditating for a period, Ronon was ready to focus on movies. He'd come across something very interesting during the week while he was recovering from the spa the cruise. That thing would be silent film.

And so Ronon stood at his podium and hit play to display a very low-class PowerPoint presentation on the large theater screen behind him. Instrumental music accompanied the presentation wherein students were shown a silent film and told to speak to each other via notecards. No oral communication would be permitted. And those who couldn't help talking would be glared at.

While students mingled for discussion, questions flashed on the screen: Q1: How do you like the music? Q2: What did you do over break?

[1. The film is embedded in the presentation, I only linked it again in case the presentation doesn't work for some reason.
2. Click 'Start Presentation' to see the slideshow!
3. NO TALKING.
4. There are plenty of notecards and markers for all.
5. Sorry to people who can't read/write, miming and gestures are encouraged.]

Okay, this class was weird, but in no way the strangest Angela had, had since she'd been here.

She slouched forward, head resting on one hand and doodling on the edge of one of her pieces of paper as she watched the presentation.

Peter didn't mind the classics so he was okay with silent movies.

John appreciated the silent take on a classic. Space Battles in fast forward was enough to keep him from passing out from boredom.

She wasn't really paying all that much attention to the presentation. Really, she was more focused on brooding thinking about her previous class.

Adam didn't mind silent movies. He'd watched a few in the past.

Dinah really liked it, but that might have been her familiarity with light sabers. The music was pretty amusing.

Marco looked vaguely confused.

Robin tried not to giggle or make too much noise, but it wasn't easy.

Gwen eyed the film carefully in case any of the participants decided to leave the film. Once burned and all that.

Bursting out laughing uncontrollably didn't count as talking, did it? Hopefully not, because otherwise Sokka was screwed.

Sam was kind of...put off by the movie, but he watched it anyway. The music was just so jangly.

Angela snagged several of those notecards, and contemplated if she could illustrate her answers, rather than write them. It would really be more interesting.

Notecards in hand, John wondered if handwriting would count on these things. If so, communication might be near impossible.

Firekeeper... had no idea what it was she was supposed to be doing, since the discussion questions were just lines of meaningless shapes. The no-talking part was easy enough to figure out, though, so she was just gonna sit here for now.

Claudia grabbed a few notecards and scribbled out: "The musik was two perky."

Bender started folding one of his cards into a dart, folding over and over until he got a really sharp point. The screen was too big a target to be any kind of challenge.

Marco grabbed a few note cards and held one up that he had written "They left things out and edited them wrong!" on.

Rodney grabbed a handful of notecards as he had the urge to write a dissertation on Lucas' vision. He did at least answer the questions first.

Although the music was representative of the silent film genre, it was completely inappropriate for Space Battles. A better choice would have been to use selections from Williams' score.

I went on a cruise.
