Heroing [Tuesday, period 2, class #5]

"HELLO CLASS!" boomed Captain Hammer, as soon as everyone was assembled in the Danger Shop. "I'm sorry you had to bear on without my presence last week. I had a superhero emergency." In that his cave had flooded, because Captain Hammer had not yet realized that basing his Ham-Lair on the beach wasn't the best idea. "Today... we are learning about the wonders of transportation!"

He passed around a few pictures of his various Ham-vehicles, mostly to show off. They were awesome, after all. "Every hero needs a way to get around. You can't run everywhere. What if you were busy entertaining until the last second, and needed to get somewhere extra-fast? These things," he said sagely, "do happen. So, today, we're going to play pretend!"

Hammer pressed a few buttons, and a small assortment of vehicles -- all state of the art -- appeared, each reasonably far apart from the other, with a small portion of vehicle-appropriate landscape before it. "I put you in pairs, and you're going to go play with one of these, and then report back to the class what you thought. I know both villains and heroes who all use these things! Keep that in mind! Tell us why it worked, and why it didn't. Now, shoo."

"Really?" By her tone, Adora was obviously intrigued by this idea. "What's not huge?"

"Well, like, I never jacked a car or anything," he replied.

"Oh, jacking is big." What? Like she knew. "I stole a horse once?" Adora offered. "He appreciated the gesture."

"Why'd you steal a horse?" he asked curiously.

"Have I told you of Spirit?" She couldn't recall. "Because he wasn't exactly mine so much as he belonged to the Horde. Just as I did."

"You belonged to the Horde?" he asked. "Like property?"

"Mm." She wasn't sure how to phrase this. "More like an employee?"

"You worked for the Horde and then stole from them?" he asked. "Like a double agent?"

Adora laughed at the idea of a double agent, "When I figured out they were evil, I stopped working for them, taking a few things with me when I left. Including my brother!"

"How long did it take you to figure out they were evil?" he wondered.

"Only 16 years," she replied with a wink. "Maybe I'm just a little slow."

"How old are you now?" he asked, curious.

Adora coughed, "Ahem, just past 16."

"You've done a lot in a relatively short time," he said, blinking. "But no jet pack flying."

"And really, I don't think I'll have lived till I've flown with a jet pack," she said, moving to inspect them.

"Wanna go first?" he asked almost hopefully.

"Promise you'll catch me if I fall?" Adora checked.

"I will try," he promised. "Unless you like shoot through the ceiling."

If she wasn't in the middle of class Adora would've transformed so fast he'd have whiplash. "And how likely do you think that is?"

"I hope not at all but I don't know these things," he explained. "I think you'll be fine."

"I'm going to hold you to that, Hannibal," she said, hefting the pack onto her shoulders and staring at the fastenings. "How do these clips work? I'm starting to understand why we have partners."

"Hold still and I'll do them up," he said, reaching for the straps and securing them tightly.

"Thanks," she said, steeling herself for the task. "So, I just push this button here and I'm off." She'd need to actually push it and not just look at it.

"And you're off," he repeated, nodding. "You'll be fine!"

He hoped he sounded confident.

Adora laughed, "I'm going to crash on your head and then you won't call it fine!"

But she pushed the button and she was flying! Without a horse! It was very awesome if sort of loud.
