Management Theory [Tuesday, January 20, 4th period]

After the class was assembled in their oh-so-stylish labcoats and hats, Yzma raised her hands grandly. "Today," she announced, "we will work on speeches! A good manager must be able to inspire others with their words and dramatic gestures. Borrowing from great speeches--" by which she meant stealing outright, "inspire your fellow classmates!"

She gestured to Toby to hand out numbered placards. "As each student gives their speech, you shall judge them!" she declared gleefully, then pointed one incredibly long fingernail towards a student. "You! Begin!"

He'd meant to pull the one lever, but he'd actually snagged the--

...that's it, he was making calamari for lunch at the Cafe this week.

A speech?!

What was it about class this week, making him want to curl up into a ball and never leave his room ever again?

By the third week, Arthur had given up all hope.

When he emerged on the other side, dripping wet and his hand still aching from strangling the beast, he had to admit he was in something more of a chipper mood.

Or at least an irritated one of a different stripe.

He considered what he should say and unfortunately, he could only think of one speech that he'd ever heard.

And the speaker wasn't exactly the most inspirational sort of creature one could meet.

"Courage! (http://www.americanrhetoric.com/MovieSpeeches/moviespeechthewizardofozcourage.html)" he thundered, trying to make the whole thing sound less ridiculous than he knew it would. Of course, he'd have better luck if he wasn't quoting Brrr of all Lions.

"I ask you: What makes a King out of a slave? Courage.

"What makes the flag on the mast to wave? Courage.

"What makes the Elephant charge his tusk in the misty mist or the dusky dusk?

"What makes the Muskrat guard his musk? Courage.

"What makes the Sphinx the 7th Wonder? Courage.

"What makes the dawn come up like THUNDER?! Courage.

"What makes the Hottentot so hot?

"What puts the "ape" in ape-ricot?

"COURAGE," he repeated, feeling like an absolute idiot, but an enthusiastic idiot. "Courage, my friends!"

Terrific.

Speeches.

It wasn't that Arthur was bad at them. Rather he found them unimaginably dull, and so he could be caught searching the room desperately for a drink of some kind as they went on.

Hinata was actually pleased this week--she'd managed to get the right lever this time, and missed having to get soaked.

The outfit could be dealt with.

Wendy pulled the lever.

A shark...with arms. Of course.

Sooner or later, someone was going to pay for this.

Wendy gave a speech. The kind of speech that only someone with a near encyclopaedic knowledge of pop-culture, who had spent a number of years rooming with an outspoken confrontational performance artist, and now was hurriedly improvising and throwing out the best bits of various speeches as soon as she could remember them could give.

"Now let's get these [bleep]er-[bleep]-ing snakes off this [bleep]er-[bleep]-ing plane!" she yelled to conclude her speech, one fist raised in the air.

And then, in an almost Pavlovian reflex, she added "Art crawl!"

"Over?! Over?" Jamie demanded to know. Granted no one had mentioned anything about being over. "Nothing is over until we decide it is!" he declared! "Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?"

Jamie waited for an answer. Yes he didn't care. He was on a roll. When there was none coming he moved on. "Hell no! And it ain't over now. 'Cause when the goin' gets tough... "

Jamie stopped. He clearly didn't know what the next part of the phrase was but he was too juiced up to stop now. He thought hard. Very hard. And finally:

"The tough get goin'!" He shouted. "Who's with me? Let's go!"

He then ripped off his shirt and started yelling something about going streaking in the quad and other loud noises as he ran out into the hall.

Inara hadn't been paying attention when she pulled the lever this week, and as a consequence, she was dripping and unhappy as she pulled the goggles off her head and smacked them on the desk.

At least the huge aquatic sea creature (http://www.oceanlight.com/spotlight.php?img=2452) hadn't seemed interested in attacking or poisoning her.
