Sam had managed to get real coffee today, so he wasn't quite as annoyed by the fact that he was slowly running out of clean clothes. In order to make sure he didn't end up with nothing to wear, he'd started rationing his clean clothes and ~~*gasp*~~ was only wearing a t-shirt and jeans today. It felt strange to only be in one layer, but he could deal for the time being.

"Yeah and if it keeps him from going back to play dodge 'em with Manticore, all the better." He gave Sammy a grin. "And if you change your mind about college, you know you can always join us."

"I wouldn't want to be your third wheel," Sam said, shrugging.

"Dude. You're my brother. You'd never be a third wheel."

"I would be if you and Alec were together," Sam replied.

"Really, no," Dean said. "I'd never let that happen."

"Maybe," Sam said, still sounding uncertain. "I still think it's cool that you're okay with me thinking about college."

"Yeah well..." Dean shrugged. "When haven't I tried to give you what you wanted?"

"Never," Sam said with a smile. "But usually what I want isn't something that completely goes against what you and Dad want. At least, I know better than to ask."

"Dad's just always wanted to keep us safe," Dean said.

"I know. Safe and secure, and college is kind of the opposite of that," Sam said. "But you want me to be safe too. And you're still sort of okay with college."

"Well, most people we know are going... and some of them have the same kind of demon magnet problems that we do," Dean pointed out.

"That I do," Sam corrected. "I'm the demon magnet. You just get caught in the crossfire."

"Hey, I've pissed off my share of demons too, y'know."

"Not as many as I have. At least, that's what it feels like."

"Maybe I'm just not trying hard enough then," Dean said. "And do you really want to convince me that you're the ultimate demon magnet when you're trying to reassure me you'll be fine at college?"

"I'll be fine at college because it's a whole year and a half away for me," Sam said. "Things will be better by then, they have to be."

Dean stared at him.

"Can't you let me have some wishful thinking time?" Sam asked. "Just a little? Even if it's not real?"

"When we're actually talking your plans for the future?"

"Those are pretty wishful thinking too," Sam admitted.

"So you're not really serious about going to college?" Dean asked.

"Of course I am!" Sam said. "But first I have to get accepted to a school, and then I have to figure out how to pay for it, and that's not even taking into consideration what might happen if Dad decides I can't go. It's not something that's just going to fall into my lap."

"First of all, big brain like yours, schools are going to be fighting over you. As for money, you get in, we'll figure that out."

"What do you mean we?" Sam asked. "You're not going to be here."

"You might have heard of this newfangled device? It's called a telephone. Let's you talk to people who are in other places. Also this other device, called a car. Let's you travel and go to places, including places you might have used to live."
