Sam had managed to get real coffee today, so he wasn't quite as annoyed by the fact that he was slowly running out of clean clothes. In order to make sure he didn't end up with nothing to wear, he'd started rationing his clean clothes and ~~*gasp*~~ was only wearing a t-shirt and jeans today. It felt strange to only be in one layer, but he could deal for the time being.

"Can't you let me have some wishful thinking time?" Sam asked. "Just a little? Even if it's not real?"

"When we're actually talking your plans for the future?"

"Those are pretty wishful thinking too," Sam admitted.

"So you're not really serious about going to college?" Dean asked.

"Of course I am!" Sam said. "But first I have to get accepted to a school, and then I have to figure out how to pay for it, and that's not even taking into consideration what might happen if Dad decides I can't go. It's not something that's just going to fall into my lap."

"First of all, big brain like yours, schools are going to be fighting over you. As for money, you get in, we'll figure that out."

"What do you mean we?" Sam asked. "You're not going to be here."

"You might have heard of this newfangled device? It's called a telephone. Let's you talk to people who are in other places. Also this other device, called a car. Let's you travel and go to places, including places you might have used to live."

"You're going to be busy hunting," Sam said. "You're going to be busy in general. I can figure something out if it comes to it, I'm sure. I'm not going to be bugging you all the time when you're gone. Only some of the time," he added with a smirk.

"Okay, let's get something straight right now before you start getting some weird ideas about not bothering me," Dean said. "I'm never going to be too busy for you."

Sam thought about the times it had seemed like their dad was too busy when he was hunting, and looked at Dean uncertainly. "You sound pretty sure about that."

"Don't know if there's anything I'm surer about," Dean said easily.

"You won't mind me calling you a lot to talk?" Sam asked. "And, you know, to make sure you're okay?"

"What did I just say?" Dean shook his head. "Course I'm not going to mind."

"You could always change your mind," Sam pointed out.

"Dude, if I haven't in 16 years, why would I now?"

"Because you haven't been away from me before," Sam replied. "At least, not as far as you were concerned."

Dean cocked his head to the side. "So, what? You think I'm suddenly going to forget about you? Change how I feel? Did you when I was gone?"

"No, but you weren't supposed to be gone then," Sam said. "We couldn't forget about you."

"Trust me, Sammy, I'm not going to forget about you." Dean smiled. "You're too big to forget!"

Sam gave Dean a mock glare. "Gee, thanks."

"Hey, I'm not the one acting silly here."

"I'm trying to be realistic, for the most part."

"Well that might be realistic for other families. But not for us."

Sam smiled softly. "You're going to have to check in to make sure Dad and I haven't killed each other."
