Food Appreciation [Class Two, Period #3]

"Hey guys!" Marshall said, his mouth full of...something. He chewed and swallowed before talking again. "Today we're going to be talking about bar food."

He pointed at the long table in the front where there was various kinds of finger foods. "Bar food is used to soak up the alcohol in your system so you don't get so drunk that you're unable to hit on somebody. Or, if you're happily married, it's there to munch on while you watch your single friends hit on people. Either way, it's good. If you hit up a bar during happy hour then you can find this stuff for real cheap. You know when it's even cheaper? Right before closing because the bar is trying to get rid of the food."

Marshall knew a lot about bars.

"Okay, so bar food is mostly stuff you eat with your hands. Nachos, french fries, pretzels, beer nuts, onion rings, mozzarella sticks. If you're real lucky there will be some sliders on the menu," Marshall said, pointing to the burgers on the table. "And, last but certainly not least, buffalo wings. For those of you who aren't familiar with them, they aren't made of buffalo. They're chicken. And they come in different levels of heat. I prefer the more mild stuff but if I'm feeling particularly daring and there's enough blue cheese dressing around then I can crank it up to hot."

"So you've got a little bit of everything up here to dig into. There's the usual array of drinks in the back of the room," Marshall said. "There's also non-alcoholic beer and margaritas back there too. I tend to stay away from those but you guys go right ahead."

Priestly was hoping not to get any greasy fingerprints or spilled sauces on his "I sell crack for the CIA" t-shirt, since he'd heard about the laundry strike.

So, you know, he grabbed a bunch of napkins to go with the cheese fries and buffalo wings.

"Nice colours," Mac remarked to him as she grabbed her own food. She was all co-ordinated today, unusual for her, pink hair streaks to go with her 'Ask about my STD' shirt.

"Thanks!" Priestly nodded to her, admiring the streaks. "Same to you."

Mac nodded her own thanks with a grin. "I've had a lot of practice," she said as she picked out some nachos. "Five years, and about a million different colours." Only a slight exaggeration.

"Still so far to go," Mac said with a smirk. "You new?"

"Old," Mac told him, looking amused. They were at the two ends of the extreme here. "Way, way old."

"No nachos?" Peyton asked. "Or onion rings?"

"If i don't take everything I want to try right off, I know I'll never go back for them," she admitted. "This way I'll at elast take a bite or two of everything."

She shook her head. "Definitely an eyes bigger than my stomach girl."

After spending so much time talking about Priestly on the radio last night, Hoshi was pleased to see that they actually had a class together. She read the t-shirt and smirked. No wonder the squirrels had gotten so squeaky when his name came up in the notes.

Priestly spotted the smirk and flashed the girl a thumbs up.

Hoshi gave him a thumbs up in return. "Sorry for staring, but I think your name came up, like, ten times when I did radio last night so I had to see for myself," she said. "I'm Hoshi. It's nice to meet you."

Priestly tried to think of what he'd done the day before to warrant that many mentions.

"It wasn't all about that stupid non-date thing, was it?"

"Nope, there was also stuff about you being dirty with a banana," said Hoshi, struggling to keep a straight face. "But yeah, the squirrels were watching the non-date. Why was it a non-date?"

"That's . . . kind of a long story. Not the banana thing, I was just trying to get more of the angle I'm likely to be working from, there. The non-date thing."

"I haven't really met Angela yet, but I hear she's really pretty," said Hoshi in a helpful manner.

No, she really didn't know what was going on.
