Food Appreciation [Class Two, Period #3]

"Hey guys!" Marshall said, his mouth full of...something. He chewed and swallowed before talking again. "Today we're going to be talking about bar food."

He pointed at the long table in the front where there was various kinds of finger foods. "Bar food is used to soak up the alcohol in your system so you don't get so drunk that you're unable to hit on somebody. Or, if you're happily married, it's there to munch on while you watch your single friends hit on people. Either way, it's good. If you hit up a bar during happy hour then you can find this stuff for real cheap. You know when it's even cheaper? Right before closing because the bar is trying to get rid of the food."

Marshall knew a lot about bars.

"Okay, so bar food is mostly stuff you eat with your hands. Nachos, french fries, pretzels, beer nuts, onion rings, mozzarella sticks. If you're real lucky there will be some sliders on the menu," Marshall said, pointing to the burgers on the table. "And, last but certainly not least, buffalo wings. For those of you who aren't familiar with them, they aren't made of buffalo. They're chicken. And they come in different levels of heat. I prefer the more mild stuff but if I'm feeling particularly daring and there's enough blue cheese dressing around then I can crank it up to hot."

"So you've got a little bit of everything up here to dig into. There's the usual array of drinks in the back of the room," Marshall said. "There's also non-alcoholic beer and margaritas back there too. I tend to stay away from those but you guys go right ahead."

"Well, sometimes people flirt just to be friendly and don't quite realize they're flirting," suggested Hoshi. Amber was her friend and Hoshi didn't want to think that she'd lead a guy on in spite of having a boyfriend.

"She was asking about what I had under my kilt." Priestly was pretty sure that was more than just 'being friendly'.

Okay, so that hadn't sounded so innocent. "You mean, besides your banana?" asked Hoshi with a smirk. She couldn't help it.

Priestly laughed. It was one of those slightly too loud, tension relieving laughs, and it sounded a bit like he'd needed it.

"Yeah. Besides that."

"Well, it is a perfectly valid question. What does one wear underneath a kilt? I'm not too familiar with them myself," said Hoshi, blushing slightly.

"Do you go around asking girls if they're wearing anything under their skirts?"

"Nope, but then again, I'm a girl! I know how girl's clothing works," said Hoshi. "And I'll have you know that I have kissed a girl before. If I wanted to know what was... er, maybe we shouldn't go there. But yeah, I'd probably be more direct if I liked someone."

"So you totally can't blame me for thinking she was flirting. Especially when I joked about her taking me to dinner first and she agreed. And then said I'd have lots of girlfriends, and that she'd still respect me in the morning."

"That definitely sounds like flirting," said Hoshi with a grimace. "But she and Liir just started dating, though. Maybe she forgot to turn off the flirtiness?"

"I guess. Still, she coulda warned me."

"Dating is so complicated," said Hoshi. "There's people I've been interested in but stayed away from because they were dating other people. Sometimes I think it might be easier to just fool around and not get too involved." Especially if she did end up leaving to join Starfleet at the end of this term.

"Yeah, I know some people who work that way." Priestly had never really understood it himself, though. He didn't want to just fool around. Fooling around was great, and all, but he was pretty sure it was a billion times better if you really liked the person you were fooling around with.
