Leadership: Wednesday, Period 1, Class 1. (1/7/09)

"Morning everyone," Nathan said. He took a spot at the head of the class. He was, as near darned always, dressed in a suit. "I'm Mr. Petrelli. For anyone here who might be close with my brother Peter, I'm still Mr. Petrelli."

Nathan handed out the syllabus and class rules. "Here's the overview of the class for the semester. Make sure to read it as OOC rules are in there too. Because I'm a lawyer there is the fine print of classes being subject to change at any time.

"Today's class is going to be very easy though. First, I want everyone to introduce themselves with their name and why they're taking the class. Second?"

Nathan sat down behind his desk, looking for all the world like he was done for the day. "Someone needs to be in charge of this class. Let me know if you figure out who that is."

"Lee Adama," he said, nodding at everyone, "and I'm taking this class because I'm figuring if I decide to go into the military that something like this might be helpful even if I spend most of time in taking orders. My father's a military leader and I don't really know how he handles the stress."

Of course, Lee hardly ever saw his father so that probably had something to do it with.

"I've got a pet bunny, too. Named Pride."

"I'm Peyton Sawyer and, uh... I'm not entirely certain how I ended up in this class. But I suppose if I ever do manage to start my own record label, knowing something about leadership could be good?"

She shrugged.

"Uhhh...." Man, Chad hated the first class. "Yasutora Sado. I'm taking this class because I wanted to see how the whole leadership stuff works."

"Tahiri Veila," she said with a quick glance around the room. "I'm a Jedi Knight -- or I will be, when I'm done training, and you never know what you might be asked to do as a Jedi, but stepping up to lead is a pretty good bet."

Not that she was thrilled with the thought at the moment, considering what had happened to the leader of her last mission.

"I'm Ichigo Kurosaki," he introduced himself. "I'm taking this class because I don't mind telling people what to do."

"My name is Hoshi Sato, and I'm taking this class because I have an opportunity to go through Starfleet officer training when I go home," she said. She left out the part about still being undecided about that plan.

"Dōjima Yurika, a senior, and I'm here because I'm supposed to be working with a team after graduation," Dōjima answered. "I figured this would be a good way to understand how someone in a leadership role is supposed to think, to make sure I don't end up following around some idiot that's going to do something stupid."

That was her official reason, anyway. The unofficial one was 'Father Juliano told me to,' and Yurika didn't argue with him.

"I'm Naomi Wildman," Naomi said, "I'm taking this class because I'm interested in becoming an officer in the equivalent of space military back home when I graduate,"

"My name is Inara Serra," she stood, bowing slightly before she reclaimed her seat, "and I am taking this class because I want to learn not only how to become a leader, but also what support a leader needs in order to become more effective."

Lee hadn't ever really heard of a teacher asking this sort of question so, he went for the obvious but not so obvious answer and said, "Wouldn't the principal be in charge of all classes? Sort of?"

He just didn't want to say Professor Petrelli because that seemed too obvious.

"Um... not me. That's for sure," Peyton said. "I guess I always figured the teacher was in charge. At least they're always quick enough to tell you that and throw their weight around if they're that type."

Why, yes, she just might have been thinking of a certain ethics professor. And she couldn't help half-wondering if he'd somehow know and show up to give her detention again.

Tahiri listened to everyone talk it out for a while, and finally sighed impatiently. "Unless you're only teaching this class because the principal made you, it'd be you."

She wasn't much for subtleties sometimes.

For those who haven't taken a Nathan class before: I try to post the night before just before I go to bed. If not, then in the morning Pings get picked up the next day when work allows as well as when I get home at night.
