Child Development- 1st Period- Class #1

"Hey, guys!" Lily greeted everyone. "I see a couple familiar faces here, good to see you again. For those that don't know me, I'm Ms. Aldrin, and I've been teaching here since the summer. Some of you know that my background is as a kindergarten teacher, and now I teach you all. So, I have a little experience with kids of most ages by now. Now, some of you might be here because you like kids, or want to go into teaching, or because you've had to babysit tiny versions of your teachers or something and want to know what you're doing the next time. Or you just ended up in the wrong class, in which case I'll try to make it not suck too hard.

"What we're doing here is learning about kids and how they grow up," she went on. "We're going to cover the physical, emotional and social development in the major age groups, and focusing a little more on the really early stages because that's when so much development takes place. We're also going to go delve a little into psychology and sociology, and there'll be a bunch of little things you can do to up your grade.

"Starting now. This week, you can all sign up for the chance to wear your own empathy belly!" This was said way too excitedly as she walked to the other side of her desk and picked up the... device to show it off. "It's completely optional, but for credit, you can sign up to wear one of these for a day. It simulates some of the effects of pregnancy, including the thirty pound weight gain. Girls and guys can both do this, and two or three people can sign up on a day to do it at the same time. Pick it up handwavily the day of, return it handwavily at the end, and report back on it next week.

"For now though," Lily said, "you can stand up, give us your name and something interesting about yourself, and tell us all why you're taking this class. I'll pass up the empathy belly sign-up sheet while you're doing introductions."

Emmett had no idea how he ended up in this class but he was here and comfortable and figured he could just roll with it. When the hell was he going to have to deal with kids?

"Interesting as this class had the potential to be, there was very little chance that Angela would voluntarily wear one of those empathy bellies again. She'd had quite enough of that in Cullen's class.

She was making the most of lecture time by doodling in her margins.

Prince Edward just staaaaared! What was going on here? How did he end up here? And the P word! No one talks about the P word! He was a man! A PRINCE! Babies were not discussed. He wasn't even marrrrried yet!

Claire hadn't exactly signed up for this class, but she had liked Ms. Aldrin last term and she didn't mind kids, so she wasn't too upset about ending up in it. She scrawled a few notes as she listened.

But wearing an empathy belly again? Nuh-uh.

No matter how unhappy he was to end up with this as one of his classes, John wasn't going to pout too much in front of the teacher. It wasn't her fault the office seemed to hate him.

Besides, she looked like Willow and that meant he couldn't show weakness. Ever.

Chad was already thinking that taking this class was a little bit of a masochistic move on his part considering he was likely to never have kids, but the whole empathy belly thing just confirmed his suspicions.

Especially since he was likely to actually try for that credit.

...Whatever. Kids were cute; he wasn't going to regret anything!

. . . how had she ended up in this class? Jen was pretty sure she hadn't signed up for this.

It'd be easy, at least. Easy? Wow, being a teenager again was really getting to her.

Yeah, that empathy belly? Just wasn't going to happen.

Claudia was totally excited for the empathy belly. She'd never gotten to design really cute pregnant person clothing!

Though the rest of the class sounded great, Francine had quite enough experience being thirty pounds overweight, thank you. She figured she'd skip the empathy belly.

Mini-humans - can't live with them, can't sell them as livestock. Bender sighed.

"Um. Hi. I'm Emmett Cullen, I play just about every sport imaginable," he said. He figured that was a safe fact. "And I have no idea why I'm taking this class."

Kids freaked him out.

"Jill McTeague, and, uh, there's really nothing interesting about me at all." Really, she swore. "Uh...I like calculus? And I'm taking this class so I can maybe figure out if something in childhood development is responsible for a problem I have." That sounded safe enough, she figured.

"I am Prince Edward of Andalasia! I've come to find my bride!" He struck a pose. "I cannot be certain why I am in this class, for I am not even married yet."

"I'm Angela, and I can make a really cute origami bunnies," she shared. She thought that was interesting. "And I'm taking the class because you just really never know when this lot will come in useful."

"Hi, I'm Claire, I'm a senior, and I'm in this class because I liked art class with you last term." Then she remembered she was supposed to sa something interesting, too. "Oh! I took a bunch of photos at the welcome picnic for my art school portfolio."

"Yasutora Sado," Chad lifted his hand in a wave, "but everyone calls me Chad. I, uh, I like kids, so I thought this would be an interesting class?"

Chad always failed on the thinking of something interesting about himself part, so he just skipped over it for now. If anything, the fact that people called him something that wouldn't make any sense to anyone who didn't know Japanese worked well enough for him.

"I'm Jess Mariano, I'm a senior," he said, because that was interesting to him at least, "and I'm here because the registration system hates me. I've learned to accept it though."

"I'm Jen Scotts, and I'm originally from the year 3000," she said. Mostly to see if any of the new kids were still new enough to be surprised. "I'm actually not sure why I'm in this class, but I guess it'll be interesting to see if the way kids grow up changed a lot over a thousand years."

After class, Jill approached Lily nervously. "Ms. Aldrin?" she said politely. "Can I have a moment of your time?"
