Sam was in the library a little early today, making a list of all the things he wanted to talk about with Missouri when she visited for the weekend. Whether or not she thought he'd be dying at the hands of Angela Petrelli in the future was not on the list, but the closer the weekend got, the more he wondered if it should be.

"Sam," Nathan replied. He had things to say but he let that sit for a moment just to see what silence did.

Sam sat still for a few moments, trying not to squirm. It wasn't like he had a reason to be uncomfortable or anything. "Uh, can I help you find something?" he asked.

"Busy weekend coming up," Nathan said, since he wasn't there for books.

"Yeah, it seems like there's going to be a lot of people in town," Sam said. "Is your mother still coming?"

"Oh yes," Nathan said. God help us all was unspoken, but still there.

Sam nodded, and tried not to look worried. "Should I start making out a will?" he asked.

"That's generally good advice," Nathan said. "For the weekend? No idea. You should still have a battle plan. Like whether or not you're going to bother to tell her that you're sleeping with my brother."

There may have been a little dig in that last sentence.

Any chance of Sam maintaining eye contact with Nathan died at that last statement, and suddenly the desk became a lot more interesting. "I wasn't planning on putting it quite like that," he said. "I think Peter wants to tell her we're dating, but I don't mind if he doesn't say anything. I think it should be his decision, not mine."

Nathan had his own opinions about the wisdom of letting Peter decide things, but he kept them to himself. "Are you prepared to answer questions about your plans for my brother's future? Because Peter may not think about it, but Ma and I do."

"I don't have any plans for Peter's future, except to support him in whatever he does," Sam said. Unless that involved blowing up, but he was pretty sure he didn't need to say that. "Is that not a good enough answer?"

"Do you love him?" Nathan asked. In part just to see what Sam's reaction would be.

Sam's reaction was to stare a little and wonder if his answer was the right one. "Yeah, I do," he said, nodding.

"You're in trouble," Nathan told him.

"Why?" Sam asked, more worried now. "Should I say that I don't?"

"I'm not talking about what you say," Nathan told him. "Just that if you're in love with Peter you are not picking the easy way out of - well anything."

"Yeah, well, I like a challenge," Sam replied. "And I think Peter's worth the effort. Plus, I figure you could use the help in keeping him out of trouble."

"I'm not sure anything could keep him out of trouble," Nathan said. "Least of all a relationship. But think long and hard about whether you're going to sign up for that ride. I'm not saying I'd blame you for deciding it's easier to go back to girls, but so help me if you do it after encouraging him to think you won't."

"I won't," Sam said, getting more serious. "I love Peter, and it might not seem like it, but being with him isn't really all that hard. It was harder to not be with him when I wanted to be."

"You haven't known him as long as I have," Nathan pointed out.

"True. But I still don't think I'm making a mistake. I've known Peter long enough to have an idea of what I'm getting into," Sam said.

"If you say so," Nathan told him. In which case, God help you remained unspoken.

"Do you have any advice?" Sam asked, not wanting to waste the resource of Nathan while he had him here. "About Peter or your mother?"

"Pete doesn't do anything halfway," Nathan said. "You'll find that's a blessing and a curse. As for Ma - head for the hills. Barring that she may like that you're interested in law."

"I don't think Peter would appreciate me leaving for the weekend," Sam said. "I'll make sure I sound as responsible as possible if the need arises."

"You might be in luck," Nathan told him. "She does go soft on him."

Not that Nathan was bitter.
