Library [10/23]

Sam was in the library a little early today, making a list of all the things he wanted to talk about with Missouri when she visited for the weekend. Whether or not she thought he'd be dying at the hands of Angela Petrelli in the future was not on the list, but the closer the weekend got, the more he wondered if it should be.

"You might be in luck," Nathan told him. "She does go soft on him."

Not that Nathan was bitter.

"He's convinced she'll be okay with finding out about us," Sam said, like he didn't believe that for a second.

"It's kind of endearing, to see him be positive all the time, but it makes me wonder if there's anything that can be done to give him some sense."

"Better men than you have tried," Nathan told Sam. "I'm pretty sure it's in his DNA."

"You got all the common sense genes?" Sam asked, not exactly sucking up.

"All the brains too," Nathan agreed. He approved of any attempts to suck up.

"And the willingness to read books and do homework," Sam said. Not that it bothered him, but it was an observation.

"He's the dreamer," Nathan said. "He could apply himself, though. He just doesn't want to."

"Maybe I could work on that," Sam said. "I could at least try."

"Absolutely," Nathan assured him. After all, he knew his family better than Sam did.

"And I promise, I'll do whatever I can to not screw things up this weekend," he said. "I want this to go well too."

"I don't hate you," Nathan said. "You have that in your favor."

"That's reassuring to know," Sam said. "Your opinion means a lot."

"Don't get your hopes up just yet," Nathan said. "I didn't say I liked you. Let's see whether or not you end up being good for my brother."

Sam always preferred working with a specific goal in mind, and it made him feel better to have one now for Nathan. "I want to be good for him. I'm going to try, I promise."

"You do that," Nathan said. He went to leave. "I'm sure I'll see you over the weekend."

"I'm sure you will too," Sam said. Under normal circumstances, he would have sounded a lot happier about that, but he was pretty sure Nathan understood why he didn't right now.
