Today the class was meeting in the Danger Room.

"Welcome to your midterm," Anakin said, pacing across the flight deck of a ship. Behind him, thousands of pricks of lights showed that a space battle had been paused for him to talk. "Today, you will get to be Jedi."

His eyes twinkled at Tahiri before going flat. "Or try, anyway. Your mission," he said, striding over to a three-dimensional schematic of the ship, "is to rescue the Chancellor of the Republic, who has been kidnapped by a General Grievous, the leader of a Separatist movement. There's also another fearsome warrior aboard, a Lord of the Sith named Count Dooku. He is not to be underestimated. He took my arm off when I was 20."

He shrugged it off.

"Regardless. You will be paired up and rescue the Chancellor. Alive, please. Your mission is to fight past the droids and the Sith Lord, get back on a different ship and the hell off of this one as quickly as possible."

He waved his hand towards the control panel. The students would now find themselves in brown robes and holding unlit lightsaber hilts (well, except for Jan. Anakin hadn't figured out how that could work). They would work like the real things, but only in the Danger Room.

Their reflexes, regrettably, were what they had come in with.

"Try not to die," Anakin said, "and for the love of the Force, don't do stupid things with your lightsabers like try to skewer your classmates or write your name in the floor." He then listed off the pairings:

Molly wasn't sure what the heck the robes were about, but the sword was awesome. She stood back from people while she tried to get the hang of swinging it and waited for her partner.

Myn walked over to Molly, feeling incredibly awkward in the robes. "Molly, right?"

He would trade the lightsaber for a good blaster in a heartbeat. Maybe it would make a decent projectile, if thrown right...

"Yeah, hey. Myn?" She hoped the pronunciation was right. Molly was very proud of herself for figuring out how to turn off the sword. "Any experience in rescuing?"

"With a laser rifle, yes. With an archaic melee weapon..." Myn paused, then shrugged sheepishly. "No, unfortunately. I know a little about Jedi, but not enough to pretend to be one."

An X-wing would be nice. Maybe a full squadron's worth, including trained pilots.

Molly had no idea what a Jedi was, really, but the sleeves on the robes were getting kind of annoying. "Do we have to pretend to be Jedi? What's a laser rifle, and how do we get them?" Molly held the lightsaber hilt between her knees as she rolled up the sleeves on the robe. "Do we have a plan, or is just kind of run around until we find the kidnappers?"

"A laser rifle is a lot like the projectile rifles here, only much more powerful." Myn found the clip for the lightsaber on the outfit's belt, pulling the robe off entirely. "I think the best plan in this situation is to try to survive. If this was a real mission, I'd hope we'd have some more information - like the schematics of the place, preferrably."

Myn hated going in without a solid plan, but he didn't have much choice.

"Schematics?" Molly straightened and smiled at Myn. "You sound like you've done this kind of thing before."

"Yes. The unit I am part of, Wraith Squadron, is a combination X-wing fighter squad and commando unit." He shrugged, picking up the lightsaber hilt again and studying it instead of looking at Molly. "We usually manage to come up with something. Normally I'm recon, not the actual infiltration team: Snipers are better when they aren't in melee combat."
