When the students arrived in class, they found a basket full of adorable, plush shapes just inside the doorway. Edward instructed each of them to grab the plushie of their choice when they came in.

Once the students were seated, Edward dimmed the lights and began. He used a slide show and talked about sexually transmitted diseases. He used a number of slides showing the effects of these diseases in full color.* He did mention the role of condoms in prevention, but he emphasized that abstinence was the only way to completely be safe.

When the lights came back up, he had one of each of the plushies in front of him. "These are my gift to you as a reminder of today's lesson. They are oversized representations of the microbes that cause some of the diseases we've discussed. The yellow is herpes, the pink is syphillis, the blue is gonorrhea, the black is HIV and the purple is the relatively mild mono."

"Now please find your fellow sufferers and we'll do a game of STD Roulette."

Cal couldn't help it; he had to snort a bit at Amber's probably-not-intentional contribution.

Amber heard that snort and cocked her head. "What? It is."

Cal just shook his head and waved a dismissive hand. "S'cute," he said, idly so that they didn't get in trouble for talking during lecture or anything. "That's all."

"What?" Amber grinned, not too worried about getting in trouble. "Me or the plushies?" She wiggled her purple mono plushie at him.

Cal waved his crossed-eyed little HIV back at her. If what he was understanding about this new (for him, anyway) disease, it totally trumped her mono. "Yeah," he said, "like I'm gonna think an STD is cuter."

"Well," she said, making kissy lips at her cute little plushie, "they are kind of stylin'."

"Oh, right," Cal agreed sarcastically, "because there's nothing hotter than a chick with crabs."

"Get real, Stephanides," Amber said. "I'm talking about the plushie you dork."

"Which is symbolic of an STD, Atkins," Cal retorted back.

"No shit?" she countered. "Thanks for that clarification. But this," she threw her plushie at him, "is soft and cute."

It took a little juggling, but Cal managed to catch Amber's plushie in the hand that wasn't holding his own.

"Great," he gave a sardonic roll of his eyes, "my girlfriend gave me mono."

He only wished Amber had actually chosen a more severe STD plushie; it would have given it that much more punch.

It was her turn to roll her eyes. "Yah, and you be lucky that's all I gave you, dork."

Cal took a moment to look Amber's mono straight in the eyes.

"It looks like something forgotten about in the fridge, with weird mold growing on it and stuff."

Amber totally stared at Cal. "That's it, give me my mono back."

"No way," Cal said, pulling back his arm to distance Amber even further from the mono. "You threw it at me; I'm keeping it."

"Don't make me jump you in class, Cal. I'll totally do it."

Cal gave a slight glance toward Cullen and his damn disgusting slides, and then turned back to Amber.

"No, you wouldn't."

Amber bit her lip, shook her head, grinned. "I'm really rather upset you don't know me better than that."

Without a glance toward Cullen, Amber totally launched herself at Cal.

There was a girl launching herself at him. This didn't happen very often and, any other time, he would have been quite okay with it.

"Oh, God!" He winced at his volume and hoped that it just sounded like the latest slide scared the crap out of him. Cal lowered his voice to get the rest out: "Watch the shins! Watch the shins!"

"Detention, both of you," Edward snapped. "Now see if you can make it through the rest of class without any more tussling or I'll have to make it two."

"What?" Amber scrambled up off of Cal as fast as she could. Which, cause it was Cal, she was kind of taking her time. "But he has my mono!"

Yeah, Cal saw that one coming a mile away. He winced, clutching onto the plushie. "She gave it to me," he retorted, giving her a stealth and playful nuge. "I can't help it that Amber's a savage who can't stay in her seat."

"I don't care who started it. Both of you are being disruptive," Edward said, then added, "You can return her mono now."

Amber nudged Cal back, just as playfully. "We were playin' catch, Cal, and you know it," she lied. "And I can't help you're nothin' but a big fat bully who likes mono."

And at Mr. Cullen's words, she smirked and totally stuck her tongue out at Cal. Hopefully when Mr. Cullen wasn't looking.

"Hey, I thought that once you caught mono, you couldn't just give it back. I was just applying all the valuable knowledge from your lecture, Mister Cullen, before I was rudely interrupted."

But, oh, he returned it, all right. With a light lob toward Amber and her stuck-out tongue.

And stuck his tongue back out.

Ahhhh, maturity.
