The Library; Monday [ 09/29. ]

Cal limped (yes, limped, and pretty badly, too) into the library that morning to open it, grumbling into his coffee about a hatred for radio that had very firmly exceeded his previous apathy about it. Not only for radio, but also for all things small, amphibious, and shelled. He'd always been more of a frog person himself.

The pile of books waiting to be shelved got quite the glare, as well. Once he sat down, he wasn't moving. Not with those bruises on his shins.

"I asked, didn't I?"

Really, did he have to be so moody?

That caused him to suck in a bit of breath; she never did seem to have a problem with being...succinct. "It's..."

But after all that, he probably was just being moody and the whole thing felt stupid now. He shook his head. It wasn't like it was a problem that was going to crop up again any time soon, right?

"Never mind," he said. "It's nothing. Now that you've got the states done, what are you going to move onto now?"

Temari gave him a long and hard look for that small break, as if she could figure out just what he had been about to see.

To push or not...

"Che, such a women," She chided, but it was more out of affection than mockery. "There are more countries, right?"

The snort that Cal gave was more irritated then he led on. "And you," he muttered, "have enough testosterone for both of us. And, yeah, there are. Lots more. Thinking you should hit up Europe next."

"Then Europe it will be," She said simply. Smoothing her dress, Temari gave him another look out of the corner of her eye. "What is wrong, Cal?"

"A demon spawn with sore gums kicked me in both my shins last night; what do you think is wrong, Fan--"

Wait. Cal? Did she just call him by his actual, although abridged, name?

He cut off with a frown. "Nothing's wrong."

Temari snorted at the mention of Turtle. He deserved a good kick for the spitting thing.

"You about worked yourself up to a rant at me before and then stopped. What. Is. Wrong?"

Turtle had started it! She deserved to be spit on for kicking him first!

"It's stupid," Cal said. "It's probably not even going to be an issue anymore, anyway, and so I'd end up ranting at you, and we're both so God damn stubborn that the only thing that'll happen is we'll reach an impasse of opinions, so it's all pointless, anyway."

Temari sighed. Dealing with people back home was so much easier than this.

"And you'll continue to stew about this. So just say it and be done with whatever is wrong."

"No giving me shit about thinking the way I do?" Cal asked, giving her a warning look. If she goaded him into talking and then gave him a hard time about it...

"I can't promise that, but I do promise not to say anything until you've had your say," Temari said.

"Oh, how comforting," Cal muttered, and shook his head slightly. "But since you insist, I had a talk with Ino the other day; put some...things into perspective."

He glanced over at Temari. "You do realize that I'm not a part of your world, right? I work on an entirely different system than what you're used to."

Temari frowned, tilting her head. "Clearly."

At least she understood that much so far. Supposedly. "So, I don't need you indoctrinating me into it," he continued.

"Why would I do that?" Temari asked, one eyebrow raised.

"Why would you want to scope out my girlfriend before I dated her," Cal said, a bit of his simplistic confidence faltering as he blinked; did Ino have it all wrong, and he was about to make a complete idiot of himself? "if that wasn't what you were doing, protecting me in some way like you would someone back home?"

"I told you I would check out the boy," Temari replied. "Isn't that what friends do?"

So maybe she wasn't so confident in her answer, but there was no way she was going to let on to him about that.

Cal's hands made a slight wave in the air out of frustration, the kind that was more show than actual frustration. "Not a boy!" he reminded her with insistence. "Except for on that one day! And, no, that's not what friends--"

But Cal cut himself off, remembering his own snide comments in observing a certain object of the Object's affection, but that was different! Rex Reese was a man slaughterer and a complete jerkwad! "Okay. Maybe friends look out for each other and watch their backs sometimes, but they don't insult their girlfriends to their face."

There. That covered it pretty well, he thought.

"Not that it matters, anyway, which is why I didn't even want to say anything."

"Would you rather I be like her and do it behind her back?" She asked with a sharp and displeased smile. "I have the decency to say it to her face instead of crawling around on her belly like a snake."

As a matter of fact, Cal probably would have preferred that, because, in his world, that was how people operated, making Temari's bluntless out of the ordinary. But he just rolled his eyes and shook his head slightly. "Let's just keep it how things are going where the two of you don't associate at all."

He was still vaguely haunted by thoughts of the two of them ending up in a group together in class. Wouldn't that be wonderful?

"I've said my piece and have reason to even notice her again."

"Which is why I said it didn't matter and to never mind, but.."

"I forced you to say something," Temari said dryly.

"Exactly," Cal nodded, and lifted his chin importantly, knowing full well that she didn't force anything out of him, but sticking to his story all the same.

Nodding, she slipped off the desk and reached for the new atlas. "Good. I'll study this this week."
