Library [09/18]

Sam yawned as he headed into the library and started opening the place up. He couldn't stand having his room be cluttered in his newly-moved-in state, so he'd stayed up late finding an organized place for everything. For now, he had coffee, but he was looking forward to the weekend, when he could just relax and sleep in.

Sam sighed as well, rolling his eyes. "There has to be something else we can talk about. I just...I don't know what Peter's okay with me telling you. I don't know what I'm okay with telling you."

"How's your week been?" Sam asked. "You know, since I saw you last?"

"Probably better than yours since you haven't christened your room yet."

Sam rolled his eyes again. "We made out on my bed. Does that count?"

"I'm not going to push him, Dean. I'm still making sure he wants to be with me like this."

"Maybe," Sam said, smiling softly. "Or he could wake up tomorrow and realize he just wants to be my friend again, I don't know."

"The point is, we're not serious yet. I mean, I don't think he wants to be serious yet. And I'm not going to christen anything unless it's serious," Sam replied.

Dean regarded Sammy for a moment. "So do you know he's not ready to be serious or are you just assuming? The same way you assume no one should want to be close to you?"ccc

It was amazing how interesting the desk looked, really. "We haven't been together that long. I think it's a fair assumption that he doesn't want to be serious. I mean, he was friends-with-benefits with Brooke for how long?"

"Yeah, but you're not Brooke," Dean pointed out helpfully.

"I know. I'm just trying not to expect too much," Sam said. "I don't want to do anything that's going to make me lose my best friend."

Okay, yeah, Dean could understand that; lord knows he'd had to tread carefully with Alec often enough. But...

"He's your best friend. That gives you a little more leeway than you'd have with someone you were just getting to know."

"I know. But not enough leeway to push him too hard," Sam insisted.

"I don't know how to ask without feeling like I'm pushing," Sam admitted. "But maybe Peter will know I'm just asking. He has a way of figuring out what I'm getting at when I can't seem to manage words right."

"That too," Dean said. "Though from where I'm sitting? The best friend part is the most important."

"Do you still think of Alec as your best friend?" Sam asked.

"Yeah," Dean said immediately. He'd tried to come up with another term for it more than once, but really, best friend summed it up best.
