Library [10.09]

Karal arrived at the library with a purpose this morning. He had a class...very soon, actually, but there was time to find a book.

An important book, considering he had no idea what physics was and it seemed to be an integral part of the aforementioned class.

The book was easily found but, sadly, not so easily read. The moment he checked it out, it transformed into a kitten and a box. With a single inscrutable look, the kitten climbed into the box, pulled the lid shut behind it and, as far as Karal could tell, ceased to exist.

"...what?"

Altra rolled his eyes, sniffed, and replied, :I have no idea.:

He thought about opening the box, just to see if the kitten was all right, but sensed that this might be a bad idea.

There were heaps of napping kittens on the floor.

Karal tiptoed around them, not wanting to wake them up.

Because he thought it would be fun, John carried his own kitten into the library. The difference was, his had never been a book and she was not particularly happy. Or at least she wouldn't be later. So long as he was scritching behind her ears there were no complaints of being carted about.

"Looks like you've got your own kittens to deal with," John remarked quietly, not wanting to disturb Karal's kittens.

Karal started, then flushed, and it only got worse when Altra jumped up on top of the desk to look at John. "They finally went to sleep," he replied, just as quietly, then nodded ah John's kitten. "They started out as books. Is that where yours came from?"

No, he was not going to mention Saturday. At all. Ever.

Saturday? John wouldn't know what Karal was talking about even if it did come up.

"No..." John looked down at the kitten. "This is Jaina. Meow hello to Karal, Jaina." The kitten looked at him with a pointed glare as though he was an idiot for asking her to meow for anything ever. "She's not very happy today."

Karal did not smile, though it wasn't easy. "I imagine she's not," he replied. "Becoming a kitten must have been a shock. At least you can see in the dark?" he ventured to Jaina, trying to find a positive.

As if to respond, the tiny kitten clawed her way up John's shirt to perch on his shoulder in a more dignified position. "Ow! Did you have to draw blood to do that?" John muttered. She batted at his hair with her front paw in a manner that was nowhere near apologetic.

John rolled his eyes. "Yeah, I'm sure seeing in the dark is a great advantage, but she seems fond of using the claws. Any advice for me, oh wise keeper of the ~~doe, a deer, a female~~ deer girlfriend?"

"Spare clothes," he answered promptly ~~curse you, now I'm singing it!~~. "Carry them with you, just in case she changes back unexpectedly."

John smirked. "You know, I've changed back twice without clothes." He felt a dig of claws in his shoulder and winced. "Uh, meaning that's a great idea, Karal. Thank you. How've you been this week?"

Karal hid a smile, because even though Jaina was adorable (not that he'd be saying that out loud), she was still Jaina. "It has been well. Uneventful, until I arrived at the library and books started changing into kittens with a grudge against each other. How has yours been? Apart from Jaina's transformation, of course."

"See, I knew I'd heard something about kittens on the radio." John glanced at the sleeping kittens. "At least they seem well-behaved. Not that Jaina isn't, of course. I was getting her to meow for yes and no. It was fun. But otherwise, life's been quiet here, too." Maybe the weekend owed him that.

"Thank Vkandis for small favours," he muttered, then smiled ruefully. "I suspect it's a mark of how long I've been here that books turning into kittens was reassuring. When nothing odd is happening, I start to worry."

John reached up and rubbed the Jaina kitten's ears and she started purring like an engine. "Yeah, as much as I like normal normal every once in a while, for Fandom, normal is weird. If that makes any sense."

"It makes perfect sense," Karal replied. "Which is a sign that we have both been here too long!"
