Library [10.09]

Karal arrived at the library with a purpose this morning. He had a class...very soon, actually, but there was time to find a book.

An important book, considering he had no idea what physics was and it seemed to be an integral part of the aforementioned class.

The book was easily found but, sadly, not so easily read. The moment he checked it out, it transformed into a kitten and a box. With a single inscrutable look, the kitten climbed into the box, pulled the lid shut behind it and, as far as Karal could tell, ceased to exist.

"...what?"

Altra rolled his eyes, sniffed, and replied, :I have no idea.:

He thought about opening the box, just to see if the kitten was all right, but sensed that this might be a bad idea.

In which there is a lack of Karal, seeing as he had to run to class.

In which there is no longer a lack of Karal.

He was sitting at the counter, staring bemusedly through Altra's eyes at the box. "Surely it has to move sometime," he ventured.

There was no answer from the kitten in the box. Presuming it was still there.

Resigned to not getting his book back, Karal had gone to find another, one on a subject he knew something about. Judging by its title, it seemed to be about the deities of the United States.

When he checked it out, it changed into a veritable army of kittens who disappeared into the stacks, running chaotic though they could hardly be seen. Only two stayed at the counter, one big one, who was turning bright silvery coins over and over in his paws, and the other, who had only one eye and seemed to be orchestrating the chaos.

"I will never understand this place," Karal decided. The coin-manipulating kitten gave him what might have been a look of sympathy.

The kittens had split into two groups, both of whom seemed to hate each other. Karal attempted to keep the peace by dividing his lunch in two and feeding them on opposite sides of the library.

Altra climbed onto a tall shelf and stayed there, out of the way of whatever trouble was coming.

The box on the counter was still closed, and Karal regarded it fondly from his position perched atop a stool.

He was keeping his feet well out of the way of the kittens, who seemed inclined to wage war around him. Well, as much war as kittens could wage, which seemed to consist mostly of mad leaps (and attempts to climb his legs), followed by sudden attacks of sleep.

There were heaps of napping kittens on the floor.

Karal tiptoed around them, not wanting to wake them up.

Why yes, I have been waiting gleefully for today!

Gavin stopped in before his class, wondering if Karal would be as jumpy as John when he showed up.

That, of course, meant he was smiling when he walked in the door.

Altra very slowly turned around to face Gavin, and Karal froze while a slow flush covered his cheeks.

He opened his mouth to say something and no actual words came out.

"What?" Gavin asked, coming up towards the desk. "No hug for me?"

Karal groaned and dropped his forehead onto the desk with an audible clunk. "Is it too late to hide under the desk?"

"Yes," he said but held a finger to Karal before turning to Altra. "Hey, Altra. Thanks for the assist the other day. I owe you one."

Altra's whiskers twitched as Karal clunked his forehead on the desk again. :It was my pleasure. I'd have intervened earlier, but,: he rolled one shoulder in a kitty shrug, :there are rules about interfering.:

"And I did think I'd be able to handle it but..." Gavin grinned at Karal and reached over to pat his shoulder, "...they were pretty insistent."

Somewhat reassured by the shoulder pat, Karal smiled weakly at Gavin and decided to forego another clunk. "Gremlins are evil," he said on a sigh.

OMG, I love you for choosing both the books and the physics experiment.

*starts calling Karal Mr. Schroedinger*

"You don't have to tell me twice," Gavin said. "Magician, remember? Barbershop, remember? The ones that bit you were particularly evil, it seems."

Karal made a disgusted face at the memories. "It was only one, which must be why John and I were afflicted with the same madness," he muttered. "I will replace your pillow though."

"Thanks," Gavin laughed. "What'd Evey say about all that? I'm sure she heard about it on the radio."

Karal groaned again. "She saw it first hand," he admitted, flushing again. "Before you arrived. Thankfully, she thought it was amusing. Very amusing." He sighed, smiling a little bit more. "I didn't think she would ever stop laughing."

[ooc: must sleep now!]

"Good," Gavin said and laughed. "I hoped she wouldn't think you and John were actually that into me. Because...wow, you were guys were into me."

[Sleep well!]

Best kitten-books ever. You win. That is all.

United States Deities is such an awesome book. I am full of squee!

"We weren't really!" he protested. "It wasn't us!" He paused, then started to grin. "But I think the gremlin might have been."
