Sam was glad to be back in the library, even if he was going to have to get used to being there on Thursdays. Wanting to make a good impression on the new librarian, he got to the library early to get everything set up long before he opened the doors to everyone else.

"Maybe he figured you weren't worth listening to because you're not really her brother," Sam replied.

"I'm the closest she's got," Dean pointed out. "And really the proper reaction if he really cares for her is to be glad she's got someone looking out for her, and to say he would do the same. Not go on about how he doesn't get naked until the fourth date."

Sam couldn't help but snicker. "Maybe Alice likes him? Maybe she can get rid of him on her own if she doesn't."

"Maybe," Dean said, "but Sammy, I'm not kidding when I say she's kinda fragile. She's lost her entire family in a fire and that really messed her up. She's just starting to really open up and I don't want some ass to knock her back down again."

Sam got a little more serious when he could tell that Dean was being serious too. "Have you tried talking to her about this?" he asked.

"I talked to her when I first heard she was dating him, but that was before he acted like an ass," Dean said. "I'm going to have to talk to her again."

"My advice would be to not mention that you think he's an ass until you absolutely have to," Sam said. "Or things might not start off well."

"Dude, please," Dean said, sounding offended. "I do have some tact."

"Yeah, I'm sure you were full of tact when you gave Hannibal the shovel speech."

"That's a completely different situation. You get tact when you've earned tact."

"And of course Hannibal doesn't deserve any of that," Sam replied.

"Dude, trust me on this. He's taking Alice and the situation far too lightly."

Sam smirked. "And you understand light since you've acted that way with girls too," he said, more of a statement than a question.

"I'm always upfront about what I'm offering," Dean said. "I'm not sure if Hannibal is."

"If you talk to Alice, and she says she's okay with it, what then?" Sam asked.

Dean shrugged. "I guess I wait and watch."

"You know, you don't have to look out for everyone, Dean," Sam said fondly.

"Nah," Dean said with a smile. "Just my little siblings."

Sam smiled. "I assume you don't think the big sibling responsibilities go away when the little sibling can handle things on their own?" It was possible he wasn't just talking about Alice anymore.

"Just because you're grown doesn't mean you're suddenly not my little brother," Dean said, answering what Sammy was really asking.

"I'm as tall as you. I don't think I qualify as little anymore."

"Doesn't work that way, Sammy. You'll always be my little brother."

Sam smiled softly, not minding that so much this time. "What about Alice and the others. They're not really your siblings. They shouldn't have to deal with your overprotectiveness if they don't want it."

Dean shrugged. "I try and give them what they need. Some just need a 'stay away from gremlins, don't mind the weird' lecture. Others, they need more. Alice needs a family. I got no problem letting her into mine."

"Should I...I mean, do you want help there? Do you think I could help, or should I just leave her up to you?" Sam asked.
