Sex Ed, Wednesday, Period 2, Class #1

When the students entered, they found that on each of the desks was an 8.5" x 11" piece of white cardboard, a printed list and colored markers. A young, pale man with tousled bronze hair and a beige shirt stood at the front of the room.

"Welcome," Edward said, once the students were seated. "This is Sex Ed. I am Edward Cullen. I know that I look young, but I am older than I appear and I have a graduate degree in medicine." Two, actually, but he knew that would sound unlikely for a human as young as he supposedly was. "You may call me Mr. Cullen, though. Dr. Cullen is my father." He smiled, though he did not expose his teeth. "I would like to have two teaching assistants for this class. If you are interested, talk to me after class or in my office.

"This semester, we will deal with a number of delicate subjects. Know right now that the number one requirement for this class is respect. You must show respect for me as well as respect for your fellow students. There will be no crude remarks, vulgar language or snide comments. We must establish an environment of trust.

"I know how much pressure there can be to relax your values in exchange for a bit of fun. I want you to be there for your fellow classmates and provide a support system. There is plenty of fun to be had without giving in to base urges. One day, each of you will find your soulmate. Do you want to give the most important person in your life a gift that is tarnished and worn or do you want to give them a gift that is fresh and new?

"If you see any of the people here," he gestured around the room with one pale hand, "in a situation which may lead to regret, please step in. We are stronger together than we are separately."

"To begin, we will create a totem 'pole' that represents us together. I would like each of you to choose your totem animal from the list on your desk. Draw that animal on the cardboard in front of you. Then post your totem over there." He gestured to a board on one side of the classroom. "When everyone is finished, you will introduce yourselves and explain why you chose the animal you did."

[OCD coming up.]

[Reminder: Edward is telepathic.]

"No, but you seemed surprised," she replied. "Mr. Tennant must really like you if you get to pick and choose who you want to play. I didn't get the same afforded to me when I told him I didn't like Tamora. In fact, I didn't even pick Beatrice, he just gave me the part."

She paused.

"It wouldn't hurt to step outside of your little comfort zone, Cal."

"Well, no, I mean..." Cal just shook his head. "Trust me," he said, leveling a glance at Amber, "I'm not in the least bit surprised he casted you as he did. What surprised me is that he wanted to cast me as he did without telling me that he casted you as h-- Nevermind. Besides, he probably hates me and let me switch just to shut me up, and..."

He held up his half finished totem, "I'm an armadillo. I'm very set in my ways about my comfort zones. You know that. And my comfort is more important to me than his play." He shrugged, setting the picture down and leaning back in his chair. "What's so wrong about that?"

"As what? His love interest? The woman he marries?" She snickered. "Whatever, I get it." At least she thought she did.

"I know that. Believe me," Amber replied with a lift of her brows. "There's nothing wrong with it. I never said there was. Just sometimes it's kind of cool when you step out a little, going beyond what you'd normally do. You might find you actually like it."

At first, Cal just looked at Amber as she said that, steadily, into her own eyes for a long moment as he tried to decide whether to just let his eyes say it or to supliment it with a little something else. It might not seem like it to anyone else, but he did a lot of thinking, and this was something he'd, of course, been thinking about a lot. A faint smirk appeared, as well as a blush, and he dropped his eyes, dropped his head a bit.

"Hey," he said, quietly, "I step out of my box sometimes, here. You of all people know that." He lifted his eyes, though not his head, peeking through his hair at her and her reaction.

Try as she might to look away from that intense gaze of his, she couldn't. It had her shifting slightly in her chair, especially at the light smirk accompanied with the blush.

So she did know it; that he stepped outside of his box. She knew it firsthand and she felt oddly satisfied that he so readily, and easily, put her in her place without jumping down her throat about it. Amber could overlook certain issues, instances, when she felt like it. This moment, that look from him, had her feeling ashamed of herself and she lowered her own eyes, even as her shoulders stooped a little.

She bit her lip and nodded.

That...was not the reaction Cal had been expecting. In fact, it was the complete opposite and, with a heavy swallow, his expression dropped off his face and his blush probably spread and deepened. She almost looked as though...well, the timing of it was bad with her going off for the weekend, but did she regret it, then?

"I mean," he supplied, as quickly as he could, "the play's just not as big a thing for me as it is for you. But I open up with other stuff okay."

"Yah, I know it," she managed, now curious as to what he thought of it. Of that. Probably it didn't matter at all anymore. Not like he mentioned it or anything. Not like he dwelled on it or wouldn't mind doing it again.

"Why are you even in it then if it isn't such a thing for you?" There, safe ground, right? Forget everything else because she was positive he didn't reflect at all.

Cal shrugged a shoulder, picking at the edge of his cardboard. "I still like it," he told her, "even if it's not a big thing. It's something to do." He hesitated with the next part; if she'd reacted the way she did to his earlier comment, maybe she wouldn't appreciate this next one, but that didn't make any sense. Wasn't she the one always getting upset with him for 'forgetting' that she liked him? And then he goes and says something to that accord, and she just shuts up and looks mad.

And here he thought he was finally getting it all figured out.

"You do it, too, so there's that as well."

She raised her brows. There might be some misunderstanding going on here. Or slight misinterpretation on Amber's part. But whatever it was, she was surprised to hear him voice the last out loud.

Amber smiled, almost rather shyly. "Well, I'm glad for that. If it wasn't for the play I'd almost never see you. Except for now in this particular class." And wasn't that just something.

Cal snorted a little at that, giving her a grin, emboldened by her own smile, and he shook his head. "No," he said. "You would. I'd always be coming over to knock on your door to turn your damn music down."

"Which won't be happening so much anymore anyway as my roommate has come back," she replied with a twist of her lips. "I'm not alone anymore, Cal."

Cal's shoulders shifted down a little, but he hoped that it was the only sign of how crestfallen he was at that news that showed. "You're not?"

Amber shook her head, watching him. "No. Triela has come back and once again taken over her side of the room."

"Oh." Cal settled back in his chair a little more, and didn't say anything at first. Eventually, though, after a short moment, he asked Amber, "You glad to have her back?"

Re: First Half of Class - Drawing

[identity profile] minnesota-teen.livejournal.com 2008-09-03 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
She thought about how to answer that without making herself out to sound like a total bitch. Ultimately there was no other way. "No. I imagine you won't come over, or even less than you do now."

Re: First Half of Class - Drawing

[identity profile] not-a-mused.livejournal.com 2008-09-03 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
...even less? Cal remembered a time when it seemed like he practically spent more time in Amber's room than he did hers, but then there were cabins, and that sort of threw a wrench in how much they were hanging out, it seemed. It was all the play then. And that one night afterwards in his alcove...

Cal wet his lips a little and gave his head a light shake. "Why wouldn't I want to come over? I mean, so long as your roommate...Triela, right?...I mean, if she doesn't mind me hanging out every once in a while..."

Re: First Half of Class - Drawing

[identity profile] minnesota-teen.livejournal.com 2008-09-03 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Amber shrugged. "I don't know. I just figured you the more alone type of person. But it's cool. You can come over whenever you want. Triela's nice, if you don't piss her off. She kills for a living you know."

Re: First Half of Class - Drawing

[identity profile] not-a-mused.livejournal.com 2008-09-03 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
That did get a little bit of a stern, concerned look. "Amber," Cal said, in a leveling voice. "You know my track record with girls and pissing them off..."

Re: First Half of Class - Drawing

[identity profile] minnesota-teen.livejournal.com 2008-09-03 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yah, you betcha I do," she snorted. "I guess you're just going to have to treat me nice." She was teasing of course, and she grinned just to prove that fact.

Re: First Half of Class - Drawing

[identity profile] not-a-mused.livejournal.com 2008-09-03 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Cal rolled his eyes and stuck his tongue out at Amber, but it retracted back into his mouth with a grin and he shifted again, this time leaning forward on the desk a little to converse with her more closely. "Although," he said, "with the new students, I'm discovering there's a whole new batch of girls to annoy and piss off. And that got me thinking, and I realized something this week."

He paused there, letting it hand. And he may have stopped not just to try to get Amber to sweat it out a little, but also to try to anticipate her response. He sure as hell hoped that it wasn't like that last one; if it was that bad, then all of his theories were absolutely ruined.

She leaned forward as well, thinking he wanted to speak with her more privately, and she smiled, looking into his eyes when he spoke. But goddamn that was not what she expected to hear.

Amber frowned at him, whispering low, "Yah? Let me guess, did you realize how enjoyable that was going to be for you?" Damn that pricked her jealous bone and she didn't care if he saw it or not.

Looking away, she sat back, trying to ignore that intentional sting. What was he thinking when he said that?

[identity profile] not-a-mused.livejournal.com 2008-09-03 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, okay, Cal should have expected a response like that from Amber and, even if the whole point of what he was saying was going to fail because she couldn't wait two seconds before he got to the end, he just leaned forward a little more to make up for her turning away and finished. "No; I was realizing how much it sucks because no one else around here seems to get my sense of humor."

He made sure the next pause was barely there.

"Except you."

"Chalk one up for me," she muttered on a pout, still irritated, but slowly slowly did she allow his words to affect her, just as he wanted them to, she was sure.

Amber cut her eyes over at him and the corner of her mouth curled up, slightly. "Maybe because I'm just unique and you should remember that whenever you're out and about flirting and all that crap."

[identity profile] not-a-mused.livejournal.com 2008-09-03 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, you know me," Cal said, low, with his own sharp pull in the corner of his mouth, "I'm a regular Casanova over here. And don't worry."

He pulled up, shifting away from the desk to lean back in his chair again. "I do."

[identity profile] minnesota-teen.livejournal.com 2008-09-03 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Amber rolled her eyes. He so was not a Casanova and he knew it. She knew it. Everyone knew it.

But she grinned, because he thought of her. "Yah, well, good." Then she leaned forward, towards him, and whispered trying to catch him off guard, "Do you want to kiss me again?"
