Library [08/25]

Sam hadn't intended to come to the library today, since it was the week off from classes. But he'd heard through the grapevine - aka Zoe - that the school had gotten around to hiring a new librarian. So, he was taking it upon himself to make sure everything was as clean and organized as possible, just in case the new guy was a stickler for neatness and order.

Sam couldn't help but laugh. "Strong women are definitely a good thing," he agreed.

John took a sip of his coffee and took a breath. "About last week...."

Sam frowned a little and looked down at his cup, mentally bracing himself to get yelled at. "I'm sorry," he said.

"So am I."

"For what?" Sam asked.

"I don't like fighting with you, son," John said. "And... you had some points."

Sam couldn't help but look surprised. "I don't like fighting with you either," he said. "I just wanted to help."

"And you did. Things could have gone down entirely differently if you and your brother hadn't been there," John admitted. "But you have to understand, Sammy. You and Dean, you're my boys. Keeping you safe is... it's everything."

"I know," Sam said, admitting that as well. "But it doesn't feel right to just sit back and not do anything while you're off possibly risking your life. I mean, wasn't the whole point of spending years training us to teach us how to be hunters too?"

"It was so that you could keep yourselves safe if I wasn't around to do it," John said.

"Like if you need to go pay your respects to a friend, and we have to stay here," Sam said.

"Like if I have to go deal with something related to the demon, even if it's maybe getting a weapon to use against it." John gave Sam a serious look. "If I could keep you out of everything even remotely related to that thing, I would. It's already hurt you more than I can stand."

"But...it doesn't feel right to just sit back and not do anything when I'm one of the ones in the most danger from the demon," Sam said, wondering how much of his fear he wanted to admit to. "I feel like I should be out there and not sitting here making you save me."

"You're not making me do anything," John told him. "You and Dean and Grace, you're my children. There's nothing I want more than to keep you safe and happy and see you grow into your own. Saving you isn't something you're making me do. It's something that comes easier than breathing."

"You...really?" Sam said. "I always assumed you wanted me and Dean to be just like you. And Grace--well, I don't know."

John smiled a little. "I think one of me is probably enough. You'll understand when you have children that part of what makes it so amazing is watching them develop their own personality and quirks independent of your own. Even if you do see reflections of yourself and your partner in them at times." The smile widened a little. "Your stubbornness didn't come out of nowhere."

"Dean keeps saying I got it from you," Sam admitted, smiling softly.

"Your mother used to call me the most stubborn man on the planet," John told him.

"And Zoe disagrees?" Sam asked.

"Not noticeably."

"Dawn says I'm more stubborn than just about anyone too," Sam said. "She says that's why we fight."

"She might have something there," John agreed.

"I really don't like fighting with you," Sam said again. "I just wanted to help. I figured I'm supposed to help."

"You did," John pointed out. "But, Sam, I lose a year of life every time I see you or Dean in danger. Seeing that vampire choking you, knowing he could snap your neck in a split second... I'd much rather forego help to avoid putting you and your brother in those situations."

"It was good that we found you though, right?" Sam asked. "So you had the help for unexpected vampires?"
