Library [08/25]

Sam hadn't intended to come to the library today, since it was the week off from classes. But he'd heard through the grapevine - aka Zoe - that the school had gotten around to hiring a new librarian. So, he was taking it upon himself to make sure everything was as clean and organized as possible, just in case the new guy was a stickler for neatness and order.

John smiled a little. "I think one of me is probably enough. You'll understand when you have children that part of what makes it so amazing is watching them develop their own personality and quirks independent of your own. Even if you do see reflections of yourself and your partner in them at times." The smile widened a little. "Your stubbornness didn't come out of nowhere."

"Dean keeps saying I got it from you," Sam admitted, smiling softly.

"Your mother used to call me the most stubborn man on the planet," John told him.

"And Zoe disagrees?" Sam asked.

"Not noticeably."

"Dawn says I'm more stubborn than just about anyone too," Sam said. "She says that's why we fight."

"She might have something there," John agreed.

"I really don't like fighting with you," Sam said again. "I just wanted to help. I figured I'm supposed to help."

"You did," John pointed out. "But, Sam, I lose a year of life every time I see you or Dean in danger. Seeing that vampire choking you, knowing he could snap your neck in a split second... I'd much rather forego help to avoid putting you and your brother in those situations."

"It was good that we found you though, right?" Sam asked. "So you had the help for unexpected vampires?"

"It made some things easier, yes," John admitted. "But you're turning me grey before my time, boy."

"I'm sorry," Sam said genuinely. "I just...you didn't say anything to us. I didn't know what else to do."

"If I had said something, you would have insisted on coming and we would have had the knockdown dragout fight where Zoe could kick both our butts."

"Instead, I got to just fight with her," Sam said sadly.

John lifted an eyebrow. "You fought with Zoe?"

"Um. Yeah," Sam said. "I figured she told you."

"She hadn't mentioned it, no."

"Oh. I...I got mad at her when I shouldn't have," he admitted. "We're okay now though."

John studied Sam for a long moment, then nodded. "Okay then."

Sam let out a little sigh of relief and gave John a sincere look. "I don't want to fight with you or Zoe. I just...I want to know what's going on. I'm not a baby anymore, Dad. I know you want to keep us all safe, but that doesn't mean keeping me and Dean totally in the dark."

"If you want me to share more information, you have to deal with it in a mature manner," John said seriously. "No kneejerk declarations of it being proof I'm not trusting you if I say you can't do something. Actually consider what I'm saying from outside your own head."

"I will," Sam promised. "I'll try to remember the whole thing about you wanting us safe. Just remember that Dean and I want you to be safe too."

That had never been the way Sam had phrased his arguments, but John took him saying it now as maybe progress. "So, have we actually managed to have a conversation without it turning into a fight?"

"I think we have," Sam said. "There's a step in the right direction."
