Summer Fitness [Period 2, Friday]

As the class assembled at the Danger Shop, they were greeted by an entirely too-chipper Bond, and some very pretty scenery that would in no way have looked familiar to any members of the class if they were around.

"So," he began, once everyone had arrived. "I thought we'd have a relatively simple class today, and do a spot of cross-country running. Not a race though, it doesn't matter what order you finish the course in, so long as you finish." There, that wasn't in the least bit ominous.

"So, if you'll just slip the back-packs on, and follow me, that would be great."

...wait, back-packs?

[Please wait for OCD up!]

"I'm a perfectly normal height for my home," Temari informed him loftily.

"You're not home, though," Cal pointed out. "But," he added, "I was used to be taller than everyone else for a while, too; it was embarrassing back then, though, so now I've earned my right to tower over all you little ninjas."

There was a thoughtful sort of pause.

"Probably easy to be a sneaky ninja when you're not all tall and clumsy."

"You just have to make sure you don't need to hide," Temari replied. "Use the height and usually additional strength to your advantage."

"Or?" Cal offered. "Hide only where there are tall trees with branches that shorter people can't reach."

Temari laughed. "Didn't you know? Ninja can walk up trees and on water."

That did leave Cal at a little bit of an impasse. "Well," he said, and then paused. For a very, very long time.

"Good for them."

That was all he had, really.

Patting him on the arm, Temari shook her head. "Basic training for ninja."

The arm-patting got a little bit of a dull, narrow-eyed look. "So, you can walk on water, then?" he asked, casually, with perhaps a bit of challenge in his voice. If she could, he wanted to see it.

"I can," She replied, chin high as she smirked.

"You'll have to show me sometime," Cal said, nodding slightly. "And how long did it take you to master the art of walking on water, oh great Fanbutt Ninja?"

Giving Cal a look, Temari refused to dignify the title with a response. Other than a light push at his arm. "A few weeks. Having that much water around wasn't something I was used to. It took a while to get it down."

Walking on sand without stumbling or wearing herself out, however, was easy. You either did it or you died.

Cal quirked an eyebrow. "A few weeks is a 'while'?" he asked dryly.

"It's like-- doing a new exercise. You get used to it enough to perform the action, but more practice to have it perfect."

[identity profile] not-a-mused.livejournal.com 2008-07-25 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
"So, you're saying," Cal said, in a tone that showed that, yeah, this was never going to happen, "that if I practiced hard enough, I could walk on water, too."

"Maybe. If you can control your chakra." A beat. "If you have chakra."

"...I'm still not even sure what chakra is," Cal admitted. "I lived with someone in San Francisco who did tai chi and talked about it all the time..."

Zora had also told him that they were what everyone wanted, they were the next evolutionary step. Cal believed a lot of what Zora had told him back then, but, in retrospect, he was definitely second guessing her.

"Tai Chi?" Temari tilted her head at him curiously. "Chakra is the combination of physical and spiritual energy. Ninjas are just the ones who can control the combination."

Re: Put on the Backpacks - SF [Week 3]

[identity profile] not-a-mused.livejournal.com 2008-07-25 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Cal shrugged. "I don't know; I really couldn't explain it. It was a lot of stretching and breathing and stuff, and, yeah, combining the physical and the spiritual."

[identity profile] not-fangirl.livejournal.com 2008-07-25 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Looking him over, she looked thoughtful. "Then maybe. I could show you handseals some time."

Re: Put on the Backpacks - SF [Week 3]

[identity profile] not-a-mused.livejournal.com 2008-07-25 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
"What are handseals?" Cal asked, returning the thoughtful look and figuring that they were not at all what immediately came to mind. It was an image that would probably inspire Temari to beat him up.

[identity profile] not-fangirl.livejournal.com 2008-07-25 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
That was a distinct possibility.

"Handseals are how we mold chakra into useful techniques. Clones, illusions, attacks...:

Especially since it involved rough whiskers and barking.

"I...don't know, Fanbutt," Cal admitted, with a bit of a hopeless look. "Odds are, you'd try teaching me something like that and then you'd end up hating me because I just can't do it."

Temari made a face and thought about that freakish boy from Konoha that nearly beat Gaara without any seals.

"Not everyone can get them," She said with a shrug. "We're trained at a very early age to figure out who is worth the effort and who isn't. I--" Temari made a face. "--I'll be expected to teach soon. With you and Madrox, it might be good for me to learn how."

Well, that was something to consider. "I guess," he said, "it wouldn't hurt to already know how to handle a useless student, then."

"Just don't die and I'll count you as a good student."
