Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

Yes, there were more tables and chairs here. No, they were not allowed to be used for making a bonfire. Eat something hot if you're still weirdly cold.

Sam headed over to the food table with Grace, trying to decipher the noises she was making and what she was pointing at to pick the kind of food she wanted. While she was focusing on the table, he looked around to check out all the new people.

"So, good picnic?" Dean asked, coming over to join his siblings.

"Good so far," Sam said, shaking his head at Grace. "You can't eat that until you have a full set of teeth."

"She's ambitious," Dean observed, grinning fondly at Gracie. "Traumatize many newbies?"

"I haven't traumatized anyone. I didn't get a sibling this time around, so there wasn't even necessary trauma."

"Dude, what's the fun in that?"

"It's called being nice," Sam said.

"Hey, people need to be broken in sooner or later," Dean pointed out.

"Later is fine. It's too soon, they might not believe us."

"At least this way they're forewarned."

"They have some time. Like when classes start up again," Sam pointed out.

"There's also the fact that it's nice to let them know they don't have to worry about being weird or hiding here," Dean pointed out in his turn. "I mean, wasn't that one of the best things when we first got here? That we didn't have to lie about the family business?"

"I still lied about it at first," Sam said. "Just because we can tell people, it doesn't mean we have to. I don't tell people I'm weird right off the bat either."

"You're not weird," Dean said immediately. "A dork and a geek, yeah, but..."

"I mean I don't tell them about my visions," Sam said.

"Sammy, you barely tell me about your visions."

"Hey, I tell you about them every time they happen," Sam said defensively.

Alice hesitated, and then wandered over to the tall boy who was holding Grace.

"Are you Sam, by chance?" she said, smiling.

She thought she had seen him, in a couple of classes, but there were so many faces that it was hard to remember. Grace, on the other hand, stood out.

"Yeah, that's me," he said, smiling.

Grace, for her part, stopped eating the piece of bread she was working on long enough to wave.

"Hello," she said, and waved back at Grace, beaming at her. "I've met your younger sister, here, and I've borrowed your older brother for Fandom-sibling purposes. My name is Alice."

"Ah, you are Alice," Sam said. "It's nice to finally officially put the name to the face, although I'm sure I've seen you around. You can borrow Dean all you want - he's got siblingness to spare."

"He seems to," she grinned. "It's very nice. I hadn't realized school came with built-in family. It's a very unexpected sort of thing, having family again."

"I think having family around helps, even if it's just a fake sibling looking out for you," Sam said. "You don't...I mean your family isn't...around?"

Alice gestured, vaguely. "Gone," she said. That ... might be too vague, mightn't it? "Dead."

Well. She was certainly being cheerful, today.

"Dean is ... rather good at being a brother," she said, nodding. "He's been an amazing help, so far."

"He's a very good brother," Sam said, smiling and trying to keep things light. "He's the best one I've got."
