Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

Yes, there were more tables and chairs here. No, they were not allowed to be used for making a bonfire. Eat something hot if you're still weirdly cold.

Gavin was out at the picnic, relaxing against a tree and making no real move to do much mingling. He could do that later.

Susan knew, even before courtly etiquette was ingrained in her brain, that staring was impolite.

However, she couldn't help it. "Mr. Tumnus?"

Not could she help the note of shock in her voice. She felt it was warranted, given how much the boy looked like her friend, and how much he also did not look anything like a faun.

Susan was still curled up in the shade, her skirts spread gently over the grass as she watched people and took in the newness of it all.

Gavin didn't answer immediately because that wasn't his name. However, he noticed the staring and looked over her his shoulder.

"Me?" he asked, pointing to himself.

"Yes, of course you," she said, frowning slightly. "How are you here? And...did Aslan change you?"

"I've been here for awhile now," Gavin said. "You must be new though."

She frowned, and nodded. "Yes, I only arrived here today, with Edmund. You saw us off. How can you have been here already?"

"I've...never met you," Gavin said apologetically.

Her frown deepened for a moment. "Your name isn't Tumnus?"

"Sorry, my name's Gavin," he said. "Gavin Darklighter."

She looked puzzled for a second longer before seeming to shake it off and dropping into a curtsy. "My apologies, Mr. Darklighter. You look very much like someone I know."

"It's all right," he said, waving that off. "I've been mistaken for him before."

She raised a brow. "By Peter? Or perhaps Willow?"

"Both, yes," he said, nodding. "It was a first for me too."

She smiled. "Peter's my older brother. My name's Susan. My apologies for the misunderstanding."

"No need for apologies," Gavin said. "Really. It happens."

"There are some differences," she noted lightly. "You don't seem to be a faun, for one thing."

"Fauns are...half animals, right?" Gavin asked.

River had considered not going to the picnic. There would be new people, and she had little interest in getting to know them. No, that wasn't quite true, they were people, they made her curious, but other things distracted. Finally she decided to go, and now she slipped through the crowd quietly, watching and listening.

"A man's torso, legs of a goat," she explained. "And horns, too. Which, I know, you are lacking, but Aslan could have changed you into a man just to accompany us to school. If you were Tumnus. But you aren't."

Katchoo was hanging back from the crowd -- large gatherings of any sort still reminded her a bit too much of Darcy's parties -- and under a tree, lighting up a cigarette.

She was resolutely refusing to believe that some of the stranger-looking people she saw weren't in costume.

"Sounds like he was well liked though," Gavin said. "If I wasn't myself, I'm sure he'd be a good choice for me to be."

"Though I would question his presence here," she admitted, smiling slightly. "He's my younger sister's dearest friend, and I think she might miss him more than she could say if he was here with Edmund and myself."
