Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

Yes, there were more tables and chairs here. No, they were not allowed to be used for making a bonfire. Eat something hot if you're still weirdly cold.

Katchoo was hanging back from the crowd -- large gatherings of any sort still reminded her a bit too much of Darcy's parties -- and under a tree, lighting up a cigarette.

She was resolutely refusing to believe that some of the stranger-looking people she saw weren't in costume.

"You shouldn't smoke, it's bad for you," Ichigo commented as he noticed the girl sitting to the side. If it occurred to him that perhaps this wasn't the best way to introduce yourself, he didn't much care.

Katchoo rolled her eyes and, by way of response, exhaled a stream of smoke in his general direction. "Thought I was here for summer camp, not rehab."

Ichigo shrugged a shoulder. "I thought I was here for regular classes. You don't always get what you expect," he replied as he sat down on the grass, leaving plenty of place between him and Katchoo.

"Yeah, isn't that the story of life," Katchoo muttered. She wasn't exactly showing any sign of interest in making introductions ~~but really, don't let that stop you~~.

Ichigo glanced sideways, not missing the load of self-pity in the remark. At least, he was going to put it down to self-pity.

"I see you're looking forward to Summer camp," he remarked dryly. Huh, his watch was still off and he took it off to wind it back 14 hours.

Total self-pity, not that she'd ever own up to it, and moreso now that someone appeared intent on having a conversation with her.

"Oh, yeah," Katchoo said from where she was very much not moving from her spot. "Dancing with joy, see?"

"I see," he was still looking down at his watch. "I'm impressed. I'll know where to go if I need dancing classes." Maybe that jetlag was starting to kick in.

"Hope you're loaded, then," Katchoo replied after another drag off her cigarette. "Those lessons don't come cheap."

"Not particularly," he put the watch back on his wrist and glanced up at the people walking around the picnic. "Guess I'm out of luck then. I'm Ichigo. Ichigo Kurosaki."

Katchoo figured that getting into a fight on her first day here would probably not be the kind of fresh start Emma had wanted for her, so she gave in to the inevitable.

"Katina Choovanski," she mumbled, barely audible.

Hey, no one ever said she'd give in gracefully.

He tilted his head, having barely heard that. "Katina?" he repeated. "You should try the food, it's good." Maybe he just felt like being annoying right now.

Katchoo jerked her chin down in a brief and sullen approximation of a nod. "Maybe later. Not hungry," she replied, the fleeting glance she gave him hinting at a growing desire to maybe throw something.

Romeo noticed the smokers on the island. He also noticed the attractive girls. Given the intersection of those two, ahem, interests, he was almost fated to lope over to Katina.

"You know people here will try to convince you to quit," he stated, lighting his own smoke.

"Yeah, already had that experience," she muttered, and flicked ash away in the general direction of wherever Ichigo had gone. "Next person who does that gets nicotine gum shoved up their ass."

Romeo was surprised by the tenor of her words, not to mention the scratch in her voice, and some of that crossed his face. "Usually glaring works just fine," he suggested, in a rather small voice.

"Maybe next time I'll try that," Katchoo said diffidently. "Guess it was a long trip and I got antsy."

"Where were you coming from?" he asked, more sympathetically. "I know not being able to smoke on the plane from California was hard for me."

"Hawaii," Katchoo said, and even the one word sounded like it had been pried out of her mouth with a crowbar. "Customs was a pain in the ass, and now it's cold here."

[[Must flee for a bit, but will pick up when I get back. :)]]

"I know," Romeo whined back at her. "It is July, and we are in Antarctica. Even though the day is warm for Antarctica, it is not warm enough for July."

Wistfully, he added, "Hawaii is lovely."

"It really is," she agreed, the slight catch in her voice her first admission of vulnerability thus far today.

". . . Antarctica?"

"Aye, Antarctica," he agreed, gesturing to the ice floes in the water beyond the island. "Normally we are near Virginia, but the island has decided to move this summer. I know not why Antarctica, unless it simply hates me. But before his it was Bali Hai, and before that, France and Greece."

He was a wee bit melodramatic about the cold.

Katchoo had noticed that, yes, thus the curious askance look she gave him. "The island. Travels." She had a feeling her suspension of disbelief gauge had the needle at a big, blinking red E by this point.

"It has been this summer," he confirmed, wondering if she was deaf. "There were fairies at graduation, and since then..."

"Since then we're on a world tour," Katchoo concluded. She wondered if they could maybe swing by Switzerland and pick up her $850,000.
