Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

Yes, there were more tables and chairs here. No, they were not allowed to be used for making a bonfire. Eat something hot if you're still weirdly cold.

Alice was relieved to be wearing more modern clothing at this picnic -- denim trousers and a green shirt.

She was more so relieved to know a bit more about this island and its inhabitants, this time around, than she had during her previous picnic.

She was standing near the edge, glancing around curiously, smiling at anyone who might smile back.

"Alice!" Ino greeted cheerfully. "Hi!"

"Ino," Alice beamed, dropping her a very abbreviated curtsy. "Good to see you, again. How have you been?"

That got another grin, and a little twirl. "New students day! Best day of the semester!" Well, if you were Ino anyway. "How 'bout you?"

"Oh, very nice," she laughed. "I'm well, thank you. Experiencing this picnic from the opposite side, as it were."

"It's a lot more fun on this side of things," she admitted. "Because then you know what you're talking about and they blink all confusedly at you."

"Oh, I get that on a somewhat regular basis, as it is," Alice confessed. "I get far less of it on this island than previously, I must admit. My strangeness is less strange here, I suppose."

"Oh?" Ino tilted her head. "Why? I mean, I don't think I've had any blinking at you..."

"I'm a bit ... strange," she admitted, smiling a little. It didn't really disturb her, any more. "I talk in nonsense loops and I suppose the history of madness puts some off, as well. And the violence, or I suppose the enjoyment of it. You were right, about people with their ethics, and how they feel theirs should apply to you. I very much appreciate the warning."

"You're welcome then," she said with a slight shrug. "I know I would've liked a warning 'bout it when I came here, you know? It's sorta important, really."

Then another grin.

"And strange? I can handle strange. Madness... well, what can you do? It's, yeah, okay, it's a bit of a big deal? But it's not... the end all and be all of... talking to someone."

"I'm not mad any longer," Alice said calmly. "I was, for a rather long time, but I'm better now. Perhaps I'm still strange, but not mad. Being mad was thoroughly unpleasant, I don't recommend it at all. And I was grateful for the warning. I told a few individuals that I didn't quite see what business it was of theirs, and they appeared to grasp the hint."

"I'll try not to go mad," she said seriously, since it seemed to matter. "Who'd you tell? If you don't mind me asking, I mean."

"Sokka?" she said, trying to remember if that was the right name. "A boy with a ponytail, wearing a lot of blue, who seemed to think that I was enjoying vaporizing cows more than was proper. Apparently using a blaster is a solemn sort of recreation."

"...he was upset 'cause you were vapourizing the fake cows that the teacher had told us shoot?"

Um.

"Okay, yeah. That's, uh, none of his business really."

"It truly wasn't," Alice said with a bit of a huff. "Clearly, it's only proper to kill what he termed 'bad guys' because they are 'bad guys,' and not because one likes to shoot a fun sort of blaster. I wasn't aware that the two states were mutually exclusive."

"Ugh," she said, wrinkling her nose. "That makes about as much sense as what we had to do in Bomb class. I got a detention because I complained when Tyler-sensei told us to send an evacuation order into the fake-enemy stronghold before taking the building out. Who sends an evac order out to the enemy, seriously? I mean, really now, killing people is, you know, always the same? It doesn't matter if they're good people or 'bad guys' when it comes to death."

"You look far more confident than last picnic," Dean observed.

"Hello again," Alice beamed. "I feel much more confident. I'm even dressed for the proper century, which is no small feat."

"Not that you aren't cute in the skirts," Dean told her.

Alice flushed at that. "They're easier to curtsy in, as well," she admitted. "But far less comfortable than these denim pants. Did we all look so ... lost, as new students? They seem a touch dazed."

"It's pretty normal, yeah," Dean said. "Me, when I first arrived, one of the first people I met was Alec -- so I had to deal with the whole there's someone who looks just like me but isn't an evil shapeshifter thing."

"I should imagine that's confusing," Alice frowned. "Although I suppose that's a far better alternative than meeting someone who looks just like you, but is an evil shapeshifter."

"Well yeah, but that I would've known how to deal with," Dean said. "Have to admit, it's worked out pretty damn well though so..."

"You would have?" Alice asked. "Have you much experience, fending off evil shapeshifters?"

"Dad's tangled with one or two. And there was a werewolf the year before I got stuck in the portal," Dean said. "So yeah, a little."
