Somehow? Rikku was drawn to the grumpy, antisocial types.

She had a feeling they needed hugs.

"Hiya!" she chirped, plopping down across the table from him. "I'm Rikku. Are you new here?"

Warren hated this one already.

"Yes. This is apparently a busy table."

He was debating getting up and finding his way to his room. But he was here first, damn it.

"Do you like it?" she chirped, oblivious to the dark, rolling hate. Or at least not minding it. "It's nice here. Weird, but nice. What's your name? Where are you from?"

It was dark, rolling, seething, festering hate.

"Warren Peace. Maxville. So far, it's... Antarctica."

He was very forthcoming with the information, wasn't he? He was.

"I know, it's cold," Rikku said, glaring at the icebergs. "It's not allowed to be cold! It's summer! That's just seriously no fair."

Warren glanced at the icebergs, grunted, and then prodded crankily at the potato salad on his plate.

"I thought someone had fired a freeze-ray at the water or something. Knowing it's Antarctica is almost... anticlimactic."

"Don't say awful things like that," Rikku said. "At least Antarctica's gonna be gone in a week. Well, we will. It'll still be here. It probably doesn't move around much."

"Not so far as I can tell," Warren replied dryly. "Antarctica stays South. Maybe we'll hit the North Pole, next."

He figured that if he tortured this girl (who was crazy enough to wear shorts, what was up with that?) enough with talk of cold weather, maybe she would go away.

He didn't have high hopes, anymore.

That earned him a glare. "Now you're just being mean," she said haughtily. "Maybe we'll go to the equator. We haven't been to the equator yet. I've heard there is one, and I've never even seen it."

"It's hot there," Warren noted. Because this was important information, and any girl who was whining about Antarctica not having a sudden heat wave might not know such things, of course. "It looks like a hot place."

Obviously.

"I've heard that, too," she nodded. "I guess it makes sense. I mean, this world's a big ball, isn't it?"

She didn't think Spira was. Pretty sure Spira was flat and all.

"Yes," Warren agreed. "The world is around. You might also be surprised to learn that the sky is blue, and grass is, in fact, green."

He'd found someone who managed to make Captain Stronghold look intelligent.

This was earth-shattering, really.

That earned him an enormous glare.

"I'm not from this world," she announced. "Excuse me for not being all up on the local geography. I was right, wasn't I?"

"So was I," Warren noted. Because grass totally was green, and he could return a glare with the best of them. "Why did you come over here, anyhow?"

Please, please please, not to be social. Please.

"Because you looked grumpy, and people like that usually need hugs," she said.

This would certainly help his day.

He was going to stare at her. Stare at her like perhaps she'd grown another head on her shoulders, and it had grown legs and jumped off and started to tap-dance on the table.

...

"I don't do hugs," he informed her. Because he figured that she might want to know this.

"Awwwwwww," Rikku said, grinning. It was a very evil sort of grin. "Someone hasn't been hugged in ages."

For some reason, Warren didn't like the look of that grin in the least.

"That might be because nobody is stupid enough to try."

And Warren was a crankypants.

"How stupid am I again?" Rikku asked, bouncing up and trying her very best confused face. "I mean. I wasn't really clear on the whole, grass-being-green, thing. It is green, right? I mean, I'm clearly pretty darn stupid."

"Clearly," Warren replied. Dryly. He was hoping that attempting to drill a hole through her skull with his eyes would work. But that, sadly, wasn't his superpower at all. "Don't do it. Just don't."

"Becauuuuuuuuuuuuuuuse," Rikku said, "you asked nicely? And you said pretty-please? And you said it all nice and sweet, like someone who's not a grumpybutt?"

She was so going to get decked.

"I'm not going to say 'please,'" Warren practically snarled.

She was going to get decked. He was going to enjoy decking her. Really.

"You aren't?" Rikku said, eyes wide. "You mean ... you want to be hugged? I guess ... mayyyyyyybe ... I could ... fiiiiiiiiind someone ..."

She was possibly walking around the picnic table. Maybe. Theoretically.

Warren was not going to move. Warren was going to stay firmly planted in his seat, damn it, because he was here first and this was his spot and he hated everything. Did she know that? He did. Especially her, right now.

"Don't. You. Dare."

She did. She really, really did.

"That didn't sound like please," she said, innocently. Standing perfectly still. Waiting.

She could wait.
