Luau: The Main Campfire: Friday Evening

The irony of having a Hawaiian luau while in Greece probably hadn't escaped anyone.  But given that the majority of the students probably couldn't pinpoint Hawaii on the map, it didn't seem like that was enough of a reason to cancel what had become a summer tradition.

So in the early evening, the main campfire was transformed into a party place with coconuts, grass skirts, and leis for everyone.  A pig was slowly roasting over the fire, and a huge moddable buffet spread out to the flagpole.

A dance floor was set up, and Hawaiian music was playing, but there was also plenty of grass spread with blankets for the less-rhythm-inclined.

[OOC:  YAAAAAY LUAU!  Students, teachers, and townies all welcome!]

Luau food didn't count towards diets either, right? Right. Besides, she needed something to help cope while her brain tried to process the fact that not only did she somehow end up in a History of Sex class, but one of her teachers glowed and had wings. It had to be something in the water. Had to be.

Which was why Francine was drinking something from a coconut. And loading up a plate with pineapple, shrimp skewers and roast pork while debating the mushy cream-of-wheat-looking stuff.

From not too far away, someone was watching the impressive plate being built up with a thoughtful look.

...he's a cook. Food combinations make him thinky.

Francine carried on obliviously for a bit, picking up bits of this and that - it wasn't actually overloading the plate, it was just more like she had to try everything. She was just reaching for a... she wasn't actually sure what, but it was breaded -- when she started to get that self-conscious itch-between-the-shoulderblades feeling.

She looked up and -- ooh. Boy. Eyes. Green. Really green. "Um. Hi?"

He smiled as harmlessly as he could figure out how and gave a small wave.

"Hello. My apologies."

"Huh?" She tilted her head. "What for?"

"I didn't mean to stare," he told her. "I was just curious what you were picking. I like to cook, is all. Especially for people here, if I'm honest. You're new, I'm assuming?"

She nodded. "I'm Francine. I like to cook too. Not that I know how to do anything fancy like this stuff."

He looked over the table.

"This isn't too fancy," he observed thoughtfully. "But I probably spend an unhealthy amount of time trying to figure out interesting new food to make, so perhaps I'm a bad person to ask."

For someone who liked to cook, Liir was anything but well padded. He was a beanstalk of a boy, tall and gawky.

"I just like...stuff that tastes good?" Francine said, waving a breaded something. "My mom does a lot of the cooking at home, so I know how to make cake and cookies and pot roast, mostly."

"It has to taste good of course," he agreed with a faint chuckle under his breath, "but there's all kinds of ways to taste good. I like seeing which ones I can figure out."

"I used to do all the cooking and I had to keep it rather sedate, but experimenting is fun as well."

"Sedate?" Francine blinked at the word, then giggled. "What, were you cooking for a monastery?"

"Two crazy old women and a pack of flying monkeys," he explained with a shrug.

Francine decided in a split second that she could either take him literally and ruin the nice coconut-flavored denial she had going regarding flying things, or she could giggle again and stay happy. "My family seems like that sometimes too."

His family?

...how odd he'd never thought of them like that before. Such a classification had never entered his mind. But he didn't balk. He didn't mind. It sort of fit. Though--

"Your family flings it's own poo from the rafters?"

"...That's an interesting way of putting it." Francine blinked, then shrugged. "My Aunt Libby thinks her husband was kidnapped by aliens and came back as a dog? He doesn't actually fling it, but..."

"Aliens?"

It should be noted that the tone suggests he's unfamiliar with the word as opposed to questioning their reality.

After a moment, though--

"Why would an alien do something like that?"

Teddy certainly wouldn't.

"He used to like to shoot at UFO's from the back porch. Then one day they came and took him away." Francine rolled her eyes a little embarrassedly. "Supposedly."

Mac took a break in her collecting of pineapple pieces to wave at her new little sib.

She looked less confused and obviously hadn't been eaten by a locker. Good!

Francine looked up and waved back, grinning the grin of Oh, thank god, someone who doesn't have wings. Which might only be its name in her head, but anyway.

"Mac! Hi. There's coconut shrimp!"

Mac chuckled and nodded. "So there is," she said. "Hawaiian food, definitely pretty." Largely non-vegan, but pretty.

"How'd your first week go?"
