Luau: The Main Campfire: Friday Evening

The irony of having a Hawaiian luau while in Greece probably hadn't escaped anyone.  But given that the majority of the students probably couldn't pinpoint Hawaii on the map, it didn't seem like that was enough of a reason to cancel what had become a summer tradition.

So in the early evening, the main campfire was transformed into a party place with coconuts, grass skirts, and leis for everyone.  A pig was slowly roasting over the fire, and a huge moddable buffet spread out to the flagpole.

A dance floor was set up, and Hawaiian music was playing, but there was also plenty of grass spread with blankets for the less-rhythm-inclined.

[OOC:  YAAAAAY LUAU!  Students, teachers, and townies all welcome!]

Isabel thought about the conversation they'd had in Mexico. "He's the guy that's a thousand years older then you that you're in love with?"

Jen took a deep breath and nodded. "He's here, too. Also younger. No idea who I am, and I can't explain how I know him . . . or explain to Alex how I know Wes, without telling him that he dies . . ."

Suddenly having a younger Michael around didn't seem all that difficult. "Sometimes the Fandom weirdness is really fucking over the top."

"Does Alex know about the whole being older then you look thing?"

Jen laughed with a touch more hysteria than she ever liked to show. "No. Because that would mean having to explain to him why I ran away from Time Force, which would also mean explaining to him that I went on a mission that started because he got killed. He knows I know a little about what happened to him, but that I'm not going to tell him. He just has no idea how much I know. And who knows? Maybe that stuff won't even happen to him, now that he's been sent here."

"Yeah, that's like how it is with my brother here," she nodded. "I'm pretty sure he knows that I know stuff about where we came from and why we're here. But I can't tell him anything. Partly because what if it changes things, and partly because he's not going to like what I have to say." And that part might be the biggest part. "But he's here now. Which didn't happen to my version of him. So who the hell knows."

Isabel kicked at a rock near her foot. "Not for nothing Jen, but you really should come with us tonight. I'd buy you your first shot." Or ten.

"Tempting, but I'd better not." Jen was occasionally stupid and stubborn when she got an idea into her head. "Nice to know I'm not the only one who has to deal with that headache, though. But Wes and Alex? I'd rather have medieval torture."

"You have stronger willpower then I," Isabel replied. "I think I'd be hiding in the bottom of the barrel if I had to deal with all that. I mean seriously. One is bad enough. But both?"

"Clearly," Jen said, deadpan but plaintively, "the universe hates me."

"You obviously kicked too many puppies in a past life," Isabel said dryly. "You should stop that."

"Oh, no." Jen covered her face with both hands for a moment. "Don't bring past lives into it; it's already complicated enough."

"True. I'm starting to feel the need for flow charts to explain it all," she told Jen, shaking her head. "That is pretty complicated."

Jen coughed. "I . . . did actually draw one yesterday. Maybe. Possibly."

"Was it color coded?" Sometimes the only way to cope with trauma was to joke about it.

"I . . . maybe . . . yes?" mumbled Jen.

Well, it had been done in red ink. Which, considering it was Wes and Alex, was color coded.

"My inner organizational geek applauds you," Isabel smiled.

[identity profile] time-flyer-5.livejournal.com 2008-05-16 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
"Thanks, I guess," Jen said. "It's the only way I'm going to be able to keep my story straight around either of them, and . . . I hate having to lie to them."

Re: The Campfire [NFB]

[identity profile] izzyalienqueen.livejournal.com 2008-05-16 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
"Understandable," she nodded. "Lying is tiring and frustrating. I did it for most of my life. It sucked."

Jen's shoulders slumped. "I'm not used to it, much. It doesn't get any easier, does it?"

Re: The Campfire [NFB]

[identity profile] izzyalienqueen.livejournal.com 2008-05-16 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
"No. Not really," Isabel admitted. "Sorry."

Re: The Campfire [NFB]

[identity profile] time-flyer-5.livejournal.com 2008-05-16 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Jen snorted lightly. "I'll never say teenagers have it easy again, I guess."

Re: The Campfire [NFB]

[identity profile] izzyalienqueen.livejournal.com 2008-05-16 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, but think about it this way," she pointed out. "Very few people here would count as a typical teen. No matter how much we might wish for it."

Re: The Campfire [NFB]

[identity profile] time-flyer-5.livejournal.com 2008-05-16 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
"True," Jen admitted. "There's a few. Poor kids. The ones who can stick it out are impressive."

Re: The Campfire [NFB]

[identity profile] izzyalienqueen.livejournal.com 2008-05-16 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh absolutely," Isabel replied. "My friend Meg for one. She's perfectly normal, from a perfectly normal world. But she's coping just fine."

"Would you want that? If it was possible? To just start over as a perfectly normal teenager?"

Re: The Campfire [NFB]

[identity profile] time-flyer-5.livejournal.com 2008-05-16 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
"Maybe," Jen said reluctantly. "But not in my time, I don't think. The longer I'm here the more I think that's no kind of life for anyone."

Re: The Campfire [NFB]

[identity profile] izzyalienqueen.livejournal.com 2008-05-16 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'd have to agree. Just from what I've learned talking to you, and talking to Alex, I'm not all that impressed."

Isabel snickered. "I should add, he never said he was from another time. He told me he was from California. And a Sciencetologist. Obviously I knew he wasn't true but I didn't push. I mean, he's not the first person to come here thinking they had to keep secrets."
