Luau: The Main Campfire: Friday Evening

The irony of having a Hawaiian luau while in Greece probably hadn't escaped anyone.  But given that the majority of the students probably couldn't pinpoint Hawaii on the map, it didn't seem like that was enough of a reason to cancel what had become a summer tradition.

So in the early evening, the main campfire was transformed into a party place with coconuts, grass skirts, and leis for everyone.  A pig was slowly roasting over the fire, and a huge moddable buffet spread out to the flagpole.

A dance floor was set up, and Hawaiian music was playing, but there was also plenty of grass spread with blankets for the less-rhythm-inclined.

[OOC:  YAAAAAY LUAU!  Students, teachers, and townies all welcome!]

"Understandable," she nodded. "Lying is tiring and frustrating. I did it for most of my life. It sucked."

Jen's shoulders slumped. "I'm not used to it, much. It doesn't get any easier, does it?"

"No. Not really," Isabel admitted. "Sorry."

Jen snorted lightly. "I'll never say teenagers have it easy again, I guess."

"Yeah, but think about it this way," she pointed out. "Very few people here would count as a typical teen. No matter how much we might wish for it."

"True," Jen admitted. "There's a few. Poor kids. The ones who can stick it out are impressive."

"Oh absolutely," Isabel replied. "My friend Meg for one. She's perfectly normal, from a perfectly normal world. But she's coping just fine."

"Would you want that? If it was possible? To just start over as a perfectly normal teenager?"

"Maybe," Jen said reluctantly. "But not in my time, I don't think. The longer I'm here the more I think that's no kind of life for anyone."

"I'd have to agree. Just from what I've learned talking to you, and talking to Alex, I'm not all that impressed."

Isabel snickered. "I should add, he never said he was from another time. He told me he was from California. And a Sciencetologist. Obviously I knew he wasn't true but I didn't push. I mean, he's not the first person to come here thinking they had to keep secrets."

Jen burst out laughing. "That's his cover story? Oh, Alex."

"Seriously," she grinned. "You might want to let him know it's okay to loosen up around here."

"This is as loosened up as I've ever seen him," Jen admitted. "Compared to the guy whose engagement ring I returned, he's a party animal."

Isabel couldn't help herself, she stared. "Really? Can I ask what you saw in him?"

Jen smiled slightly. "He was smart, and so much more competent than I was, and he cared so much about what we were doing." Back when she'd believed completely in Time Force. "I was a rookie cadet, and he went out of his way to help me out, and besides, I thought he was gorgeous."

Reminding herself that Alex was older when Jen fell for him, Isabel nodded. "All very excellent reasons."

"What about Wes?"

"Oh, Wes." Jen leaned back against a tree. "I hated him so much when I first met him. He was nothing like Alex; he acted like everything was a game to him. But he was so much fun, you know? Wouldn't let me take everything so seriously, and it drove me crazy at first, but he cares just as much about the things that matter to him in a different way. He might not have always known what he was doing, but he always believed in me. Long after Alex would have called a tactical retreat."

"Fun's important. But knowing someone believes in you," Isabel said quietly, remembering everything Wyatt had told her when she was trying to take control from Meris. "That's everything."

"It is," Jen agreed, thinking of all the times Wes had fallen asleep by her bed after she'd taken a beating, or taken a beating from her when she'd gone crazy with an obsession for revenge. "And that's the hard part. This Wes isn't that guy yet. Maybe he's in there somewhere, but . . ."

"But he still has some growing up to do," she finished.

"A lot of it," said Jen with a soft chuckle. "So just . . . if he ever drives you crazy, just remember he'll get better someday."

"I actually haven't met Wes yet. But I will keep that in mind."

"You're sure you don't want to go out with us?" Isabel asked again. "Fun is good."
