Luau: The Main Campfire: Friday Evening

The irony of having a Hawaiian luau while in Greece probably hadn't escaped anyone.  But given that the majority of the students probably couldn't pinpoint Hawaii on the map, it didn't seem like that was enough of a reason to cancel what had become a summer tradition.

So in the early evening, the main campfire was transformed into a party place with coconuts, grass skirts, and leis for everyone.  A pig was slowly roasting over the fire, and a huge moddable buffet spread out to the flagpole.

A dance floor was set up, and Hawaiian music was playing, but there was also plenty of grass spread with blankets for the less-rhythm-inclined.

[OOC:  YAAAAAY LUAU!  Students, teachers, and townies all welcome!]

"Is that even possible?" she answered back, curious as to what he meant exactly.

Cal nodded gravely. "It is," he explained, "if it's not what they say it is. You wouldn't happen to have the low down as to whether or not any revenge plots have been going on between the members of the administration, would you?"

Amber was more than sure Cal was teasing and she was very amused by that fact. "Well now, I suppose I wouldn't be privy to revenge tactics among the administration team, given that I'm just a lowly student, Cal. But I've got to ask, why poi?"

"Because no one suspects the poi."

Obviously.

"Ah, I see," she grinned slightly. "So the pineapple would be much more worthy of suspicion?"

"It...would," Cal admitted, nodding slightly. "But, I mean, I don't think I saw the pineapple moving at all. I'll have to watch it, though."

She just chuckled and shook her head.

"How are you this evenin', Cal?"

"I'm good," Cal said, nodding. She hadn't seemed too weirded out, anyway, so good fit. "You?"

Not much could weird Amber out. She came from weird. "I'm lovin' this whole luau, Cal. And my grass skirt," she smiled and ran her fingers through it. "Hawaii in Greece, who knew?"

"I might be a little more shocked," Cal admitted, "if it weren't for the whole Virginia in Greece thing first."

She laughed. "Too true and I'm lovin' Fandom like that. If it wasn't for this school, I would never get to see places like this. My ma isn't exactly... well, there isn't exactly an over-abundance of cash layin' around, you know?"

"Yeah, I know." Not because he could relate so much as because she had told him before. Cal shifted a little, disposing of his now empty plate so he could put his hands in his pockets. "We were going to Turkey once, because that's where my family directly immigrated from, but plans fell through. I'll have to do that some time..."

"Turkey? That's kind of cool," she said, though more conversationally because Amber had no clue what Turkey was like. "I don't know where mine immigrated from. I guess it doesn't much matter."

Cal shrugged a little. "We have to go to paint a church," he explained. Realizing that it didn't explain much.

"You have to go to paint a church?"

Re: Food Tables

[identity profile] not-a-mused.livejournal.com 2008-05-16 04:49 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yup," Cal nodded. "Well...my dad did. He promised my grandmother once. But now that he's gone, I was thinking maybe I'll take up the legacy. What do you think?"

Re: Food Tables

[identity profile] minnesota-teen.livejournal.com 2008-05-16 05:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Amber blinked. What did she think? "I guess that depends, Cal, on your loyalty to your grandma, or rather your loyalty to your dad."

Re: Food Tables

[identity profile] not-a-mused.livejournal.com 2008-05-16 05:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Cal's head bobbed, mildly considering this. "Good point. Dad wasn't as big on the idea as my grandmother was, and my grandmother's still alive, so based on the pure amount of badgering about it alone..."

Re: Food Tables

[identity profile] minnesota-teen.livejournal.com 2008-05-16 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
"I guess it would be nice to do it, huh? Is the church family owned or somethin'?" asked Amber.

Re: Food Tables

[identity profile] not-a-mused.livejournal.com 2008-05-16 05:49 pm (UTC)(link)
"Nah, it's just my grandmother was really religious," Cal explained, "but my father was not. Not once he realized exactly how much he was paying for votive candles each time. No, my dad, if he had a religion, was an advocate of the god of cash. So I think he offered to help rebuild the church in Smyrna to make it his heathen ways up to her."

"Repentance in the form of manual labor, niiiice," she nodded, actually thinking it was a worthwhile endeavor despite his dad's love of money. "Most people are, you know? Advocates of the god of cash. It can rule lives and create beasts. What happened to him, your dad?"

[identity profile] not-a-mused.livejournal.com 2008-05-16 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
"Car accident," Cal answered, simply enough. In fact, that was almost blatantly simple, for what really happened. He rubbed the back of his neck a little.

[identity profile] minnesota-teen.livejournal.com 2008-05-16 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh, I'm sorry," she said, an automatic response to death, but it was still very much meant. Amber wasn't going to ask further questions regarding it, but she did wonder how old Cal was when his dad died. Growing up without one, she was always curious as to others. Probably not a natural feeling but it was there nonetheless.

[identity profile] not-a-mused.livejournal.com 2008-05-16 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Cal shrugged a little. "Nothing you can really do about it, anyway," he said, noncommittally, thinking that, wow, he really knew how to bring around the best conversations ever, now, didn't he?

Re: Food Tables

[identity profile] minnesota-teen.livejournal.com 2008-05-16 06:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, Amber did ask so it was partly her fault for the turn in coversation.

"Do you dance, Cal?"
