Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Oh look, there were tables and chairs over here too, away from all the informational stuff. Enjoy the food!

[WAIT FOR THE OCD PLEASE. OCD IS UP. This is the FIRST post for general mingling. Please use this post first, if your browser can handle the comment load. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are here and there is more room for mingling here.]

Alex had food, since he figured it was expected of him, but it wasn't like any food he'd ever seen before, so he was mostly staring at it, not eating it, and looking very confused indeed.

Having been in such a situation like this before, he left his spot near the tree (easily reclaimable and there was always the broom if he wanted to hide in the tree) and wandered over.

"Sensitive stomach?" he asked carefully.

"No, it's just..." Alex held up a chocolate chip cookie. "What is this?"

"It's a cookie," he said, trying not to sound as if that should be obvious. After all, he hadn't known quite a lot when he'd first come here and it wasn't fair for him to lord over anyone else.

Though it was tempting.

"With bits of chocolate in it."

"Yeah, we don't have these when--I mean, where, where I come from. What's chocolate, anyway? Never heard of it." The poor guy.

...

Liir looked at the spread on the table before an incredible burst of hubris made him pull one of the brownies he'd made earlier today from his satchel.

"Here. This is proper chocolate."

Alex took the brownie from him and eyed it warily. "I say again, what's in it?"

[identity profile] new-to-liirness.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Liir started listing off the recipe for the brownie, in detail, mentioning where he'd put in a little more of this or that that wasn't in the recipe.

"No nuts, if that's what you're worried about."

"So what you're saying is," Alex said, eyeing the brownie warily, "this food item has no redeeming value whatsoever."

"That depends entirely on what you consider 'value'," he pointed out without offense. Health-wise, it wasn't the best thing you could eat. But tastewise, there wasn't much you could find on the island that'd be better, if he didn't say so himself.

Alex was mostly concerned with healthiness, but he figured it would be rude not to try it, so he took a nibble.

It wasn't anything like anything he'd ever tasted before. And he didn't think it was going to be his favorite thing, but it wasn't bad. "Huh."

He smiled.

"If you prefer fruit to chocolate, I've got some other things. Or I can point out a few good dishes on the table.

"I was TA in the cooking class last semester and I work at the cafe down in town."

Fruit was good. Fruit had vitamins and things. "Wow, really? Our food mostly comes from, you know, machines."

Isabel couldn't help but remember a story she'd heard way back when. "I can promise you," she said. "I'm 99% positive no cookies have been made using people parts."

"That's not what I'm worried about," Alex mumbled. "It's just so unhealthy."

"So hit the gym, or go for a run to work it off," she shrugged. "It's what I usually do after a calorie festival like today."

"Or," Alex pointed out, not unreasonably he felt, "you could just not eat this junk to start with." He paused. "That was rude, wasn't it?"

Isabel blinked. Because yeah, rude. "It was. But I'll give you points for realizing it."

[And now I go poof till about 6:30 or so]

At least he'd actually realized it before someone walked away in a huff this time. "I'm sorry. It's just--we don't have this stuff where I come from."

((Whee slowplay.))

"And we probably have a too much of it," Isabel admitted. "But seriously? You don't? What kind of place do you come from? By the way, I'm Isabel."

"Um, California?" Alex tried. He suddenly remembered one of the coping mechanisms for when people noticed weirdness in this time period. "My parents were Scientologists. I'm Alex Drake."

"Did they make a habit of jumping on couches?" she asked. "Because I just never understood that."

"But it's nice to meet you Alex Drake. And welcome to Fandom. You have no idea what you've gotten yourself into." He was the first newbie she'd talked to. In Parker's name she'd have to tease him a little.

"What? No." Now Alex was really confused. "And I think I've got the general idea. Chris is helping me." He hesitated. "Are there really--" his voice lowered, "are there really mutants here?" he asked, looking worried.

[identity profile] izzyalienqueen.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
"Chris Halliwell?" As if there was another Chris to be confused with. "He's a good guy. His brother and I are dating."

Isabel raised an eyebrow. "There are. Is that going to be a problem?"
