Having been in such a situation like this before, he left his spot near the tree (easily reclaimable and there was always the broom if he wanted to hide in the tree) and wandered over.

"Sensitive stomach?" he asked carefully.

"No, it's just..." Alex held up a chocolate chip cookie. "What is this?"

"It's a cookie," he said, trying not to sound as if that should be obvious. After all, he hadn't known quite a lot when he'd first come here and it wasn't fair for him to lord over anyone else.

Though it was tempting.

"With bits of chocolate in it."

"Yeah, we don't have these when--I mean, where, where I come from. What's chocolate, anyway? Never heard of it." The poor guy.

Liir looked at the spread on the table before an incredible burst of hubris made him pull one of the brownies he'd made earlier today from his satchel.

"Here. This is proper chocolate."

Alex took the brownie from him and eyed it warily. "I say again, what's in it?"

Liir started listing off the recipe for the brownie, in detail, mentioning where he'd put in a little more of this or that that wasn't in the recipe.

"No nuts, if that's what you're worried about."

"So what you're saying is," Alex said, eyeing the brownie warily, "this food item has no redeeming value whatsoever."

"That depends entirely on what you consider 'value'," he pointed out without offense. Health-wise, it wasn't the best thing you could eat. But tastewise, there wasn't much you could find on the island that'd be better, if he didn't say so himself.

Alex was mostly concerned with healthiness, but he figured it would be rude not to try it, so he took a nibble.

It wasn't anything like anything he'd ever tasted before. And he didn't think it was going to be his favorite thing, but it wasn't bad. "Huh."

He smiled.

"If you prefer fruit to chocolate, I've got some other things. Or I can point out a few good dishes on the table.

"I was TA in the cooking class last semester and I work at the cafe down in town."

Fruit was good. Fruit had vitamins and things. "Wow, really? Our food mostly comes from, you know, machines."

Liir's eye actually twitched.

It was obvious he had something to say about that, had a lot of things to say about that, had, in fact, a rant and some change to say about food from machines but he doesn't say it. Instead, he smiled.

"Well, if you tell me what you like, I can help you pick out some things," he said as placidly as he could manage.

"Oh, I'll eat anything," Alex said. Turning down food had never really been an option. "I'm just not used to so much choice."

"Neither was I, when I first came, but if you're going to eat, you might as well eat something good."

He quirked his lips before pointing to a few of the plates.

"I'd recommend those."

It was a pretty even spread, variety and quality both considered equally.

Alex eyed them warily. "Are they healthy?" This was his main concern, yes.

He nodded, as if that should be obvious.

"It's the only preference of yours I seem to know, so I picked as such. It's even relatively balanced.

"Cooking isn't just throwing things into a pot, you know."

Alex took a little bit of each of the things Liir had suggested and said, "No, I...really don't. Like I said. No experience."

"Something I suppose we could discuss after we trade names?"

He smiled, genuinely, and held out a hand.

"Liir... Thropp."

The last was a little harder than the first.
