Oh look, there were tables and chairs over here too, away from all the informational stuff. Enjoy the food!

That tall boy looked like she felt.

So Kaylee went over to stare with him. "Something in particular that we're lookin' at, or just, y'know, all of it? There's a lot of 'all of it' so it's not like I'd blame you."

"All of it," he answered after some consideration. "There's so much my eyes can't see everything. Maybe I need glasses. Do you think glasses would help?"

Maybe he just needed to calm down.

"I think glasses'd just make it all clearer, but not make it easier to see it all," Kaylee offered, grinning. "You don't like crowds?"

It was just kind of a guess.

"I'm not...really used to them," he said, shuffling his feet a bit. "Or, I'm not used to being in crowds. I can watch crowds on television and movies and not have a panic attack. I don't have a crowd phobia."

He took a breath, finally.

"Right," Kaylee said, nodding along with that. "Nothin' wrong with not bein' used to seeing this many people at all. I'm not used to it myself."

She turned, offering him a hand. "Hi, I'm Kaylee. I'm gonna guess you're new too?"

Ned hadn't planned for hand shaking. Ned hadn't planned to touch anything at all, if he was honest with himself.

He looked down at her hand and reached out, finally settling on just waving his hand above hers briefly before tucking it away quickly and blushing. "Ned. I'm Ned. And yeah, very new. I feel like I'm sticking out with how new I am."

Kaylee watched that thing with the hand, decided he must be awful shy (probably not too good with girls, 'specially -- she knew lots of boys like that) and stuck her own hand back in her pocket with a smile.

"Kinda," she agreed. "But I think we all are. It's real different from what I thought this was gonna be like. And it kinda shows on all our faces, y'know?"

"Oh, oh yeah," he agreed, nodding because he'd been too busy drowning in his own shock to really notice a lot of expressions. "You look like you're doing okay, though. Not too surprised."

She shrugged cheerfully. "Got here okay, didn't I? I can get back home just fine too, when the time comes, and no one here's gonna hurt me none. It's exciting!"

Her words were enough to make Ned grin lightly. "I hope no one hurts you. I think a welcoming picnic would be pretty much tarnished if that happened."

[identity profile] weefeetbigboots.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)
She nodded seriously. "'less it was just me doin' something dumb, like if I walked into a tree or somethin'. Then I wouldn't mind if everyone laughed."

"I've done that before," he said, stupidly proud of himself for having done that. "Well, no, actually, I tripped on a rock that was in front of the tree and I fell into the tree and my shirt got caught on a root or a branch and that was embarrassing."

[identity profile] weefeetbigboots.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
"It sounds painful," Kaylee said, wincing sympathetically. "Did you get real banged up from it?"

Re: General Mingling (Summer 2008)

[identity profile] death-and-pies.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
"Not really," he assured her. "The headmistress just told me I was clumsier than a giant on ice skates and sent me to wash my shirt because I'd gotten grass stains on it. I'm not a giant. I'm just a little tall."

He was very tall. "And I've never been on ice skates either."

[identity profile] weefeetbigboots.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
"You're real tall," she countered lightly. "But your headmistress don't sound too nice at all. No need to pick on someone just 'cause they're not so graceful sometimes."

"All the time," he corrected, shrugging. "You don't want to see me dance. I don't want to see me dance. I think I'd hurt people's eyes. And ears. Not that I make noise when I dance. I don't gyrate or anything. I don't dance. Never. Ever."

Kaylee raised her brows. "Not at all? Not even if someone asked?"

"Someone wants to dance with me?" He looked around, eyes scanning the crowd for someone insane enough to take on that task. "Are they insane? If they are, it's okay because I think I have a touch of the insanity too. Maybe they could dance and I could take notes?"

"It's hypothetical-like," she explained, grinning at him. "They might be insane or they might just like dancing."

"I dance like I have lead in my feet," he whispered conspiratorially. "Um, not that I've watched myself dance or anything or danced with my dog when I was really bored before. Digby doesn't dance either. We're two guys who don't dance. At all. And have never danced together. At all."

"I don't really believe you," Kaylee decided, smiling up at him. "You've got a dog, though?"

"I do, actually," he said, actually smiling at the mention of his dog. He left out the part where he couldn't actually touch Digby anymore. "He's a Golden Retriever. Named Digby."

He frowned, then, looking thoughtful. "I think. He changes names on a daily basis. Yesterday, his name was Klaus."

Ned couldn't hold the straight face though and ended up laughing. "Just kidding." And back to the straight face. "Or am I? No, I am."

Kaylee giggled. "You're a lot better at keeping your face like that than me. Did you bring him with you?"

"He's back in my room," Ned told her, crooking a thumb towards the dorms. "Hanging out, living the large life of a dog. He's adjusting better than I am. Sometimes, I wish I was a dog."

Pause.

"That didn't come out right," he said, shaking his head. "I don't want to be a dog. I like who I am. And all that fur has to be hot."

"Yeah, but dogs get to just lie around, and enjoy stuff, and not worry 'bout things like being years and years in the past or whether they can dance right," Kaylee pointed out. "Dogs don't got it too bad."
