Oh look, there were tables and chairs over here too, away from all the informational stuff. Enjoy the food!

"I don't know anything about jinxes either," she told him seriously. "I just thought that'd be funny."

"You just wanted to see me dance," Ned accused lightly. "Now, you've seen the absolute most terrifying thing in the world and nothing will ever scare you again."

"Any time I get a nightmare," she decided, "that'll help put it in its less-scary place."

"I don't know if anyone's ever thought about me dancing to make them less scared," he said, blushing a little. "When I get nightmares, I think about...well, nothing really. I just wake up and stay up."

She smiled softly. "Well, it won't make me less scared," she teased. "It'll just redirect my fear to your scary dancing. Put things in perspective, like. 'Course I don't have nightmares too often."

"Well, that's good, that you don't get nightmares," he said, nodding. "And...if thinking about my dancing helps, that's good too. I don't tend to get nightmares because I don't sleep a lot."

He shrugged and said, "Nothing seems as scary when you picture someone like me trying to dance. See, but now, I'm going to picture myself dancing and that's just weird. Daydreaming about myself is weird."

"Why don't you sleep much?"

Of all that he said, that was what stuck with her.

"Oh, there's the..." No, that explanation wouldn't do. "Well, I mean, there's...things to do at night."

He rubbed the back of his neck. "Like...night walking."

It was weak and even he knew it but it was better than nothing.

Even Kaylee knew when to back off a subject, so it was time to just go with it. "Oh right, night walking! I know how that goes. Do some of my best thinkin' out on night walks."

"Exactly," he said, smiling in both relief and gratitude. "There's the moon and the stars and it's quiet. But it's a good quiet not a forced quiet."

"Don't got a moon at home," she admitted. "But the stars help, when I can see 'em."

Ned refrained, thankfully, from pointing at her and yelling 'you're from space!' since the moon comment pretty much gave that away. That or she really really needed glasses.

"No moon?" He didn't know why or how or even where it came from but he looked down at his feet, at his shoe and drew a big circle in the grass and dirty with the toe of one shoe. "There, you have a moon now. It's not a sun because there are no rays. It's a moon. Trust me."

"It looks like a moon," she said, tilting her head and grinning. "Clearly not a planet or a sun. Thanks. I kinda live on a moon, at home, but it ain't as pretty as that one, or Earth's."

[identity profile] death-and-pies.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
"You live on moon?" Ned asked, curiosity taking over for the shock. "Isn't dark there? With lots of rocks?"

"It's just that it's too little to be considered a planet," Kaylee explained. "It's been terraformed an' all. No problem livin' there."

"I live in a village with a sunflower field," he said lamely. "A gigantic sunflower field."

[identity profile] weefeetbigboots.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
"Shiny," Kaylee said enviously. "I love sunflowers. They're so big and bright and happy. Only ever seen 'em a couple times, though."

Re: General Mingling (Summer 2008)

[identity profile] death-and-pies.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
"Wait, I have one." He didn't but he made a show of patting down his shirt and pants and then looking sad. "I left them in my other pants. I tend to keep sunflowers there just to give out!"

[identity profile] weefeetbigboots.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Kaylee grinned and tsked at him. "Such a disappointment. And here I was gonna give you some moondust in exchange."

Well, no. But she could dust off her boots and offer him that.

[identity profile] death-and-pies.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
"I don't really have a sunflower in my other pants," he confessed quietly. "You should give the moondust to someone who might actually have a sunflower. The only thing that's in my other pants is lint and probably a half eaten pack of Lifesavers. Unless Digby ate the rest. He sometimes does that."

[identity profile] weefeetbigboots.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
"Is it okay for a dog to eat those?" she asked, wondering what Lifesavers were.

[identity profile] death-and-pies.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
"As long as he stays out of the alcohol," Ned said as seriously as he could manage. "The last thing I need is a dog on a bender. Again."

She almost laughed, and then paused and went, "...did that really happen?"

She didn't want to laugh if it was bad for him.

"No," he said, pleased that he'd gotten her that time. "No, he only drinks coffee."

"Don't believe you," she decided, giggling in earnest now.
