Library [04/28]

Sam didn't have to open the library today, with classes being over and all, but he was pretty sure Maggie would never forgive him if he didn't let her near the books that were here.

"Don't touch anything bad!" he said as she took off running into the stacks. "I'll know if you do!"

He wasn't sure if anyone else would want to bring their kids by, but it was worth a shot.

"Me too," Peter said. He gave Maria a tight hug back. "You know you're my favorite daughter, right?"

"I'm your only daughter!" Maria said, giggling.

Peter made a pffft sound. "Like that matters. I'm telling you, you get this kind of obsession for detail from Sam."

"Can I tell Grandma that?" Maria asked. "She says I don't get anything from Dad."

"Yes, you may," Peter said. "Especially since given where Uncle Nathan wants to send you, we'd better hope you got your smarts from Sam."

"I'm smart like both of you," Maria said, sounding very much like she'd been trained to say that.

"I like that answer," Sam said, smirking at Peter. "We could always say no to Uncle Nathan."

"Well, it is a good school," Peter admitted. "Nathan loved it. So if she's bookish like either one of you, it might not be a bad idea."

Because, of course, this was a conversation that Peter and Sam needed to be having.

It might not have been a conversation they needed to have, but Sam was finding it fun anyway.

"Do you like to read like me?" Sam asked, leaning down a little to look at Maria.

"No one in the whole world likes reading as much as you," Maria said, sneaking her donut out of the bag. "I like fairy tales. And stories about princesses."

"What's your feeling on school uniforms?" Peter asked. This could possibly be the make or break point on whether she was more his daughter or Sam's.

Maria thought for a second. "Are the uniforms pretty?"

"Good question," Peter admitted. "I wasn't much older than you, so I have to admit I wasn't looking at the girl uniforms too much."

"If they're pretty, then they're okay," she said. "Did you like it there?"

Oh the joys of trying not to be a bad influence on your own children.

"I like it better here," Peter said, glancing at Sam. "But that's for high school. For elementary we'd want you closer to home. Actually we'll see if we even let you leave the house. We may wait until you're 80."

"I like the sound of that a lot," Sam said, smiling at Peter. "We can keep you home where you'll be nice and safe."

"But I'll be oooold!" Maria protested.

"Nuh-uh," Peter said. "You'd still be younger than us."

"But you'll be super old! Like a hundred and fifty!"

"I think math skills might be the first thing to work on," Sam said, laughing.

"Hey, that's all you," Peter said. "Math I do not su... uh, do bad at."

"Nice save," Sam said.

"Does Daddy have to put money in the Bad Word Jar?" Maria asked around a mouthful of donut.

Sam laughed. "No. We have a Bad Word Jar?" he asked. "Chew and swallow before you answer."

Maria was quiet for a few moments as she did as she was asked. "I called a mean lady in the grocery store the bad b-word and now we have the jar and you have to put a dollar in it every time you say something bad and I didn't get to see Uncle Dean for a whole month."
