Biff got halfway through his opening sentence of "Today we're going to talk about--" when lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone out from him, and his hair looked like a shampoo ad.

And Biff was sore annoyed.

"Azriel?"

The blonde man in the ~~dress~~ robes nodded his head placidly.

"I'm kind of in the middle of something," Biff said testily.

Azriel looked confused. It was not an uncommon expression for him. "The Son said to see you immediately."

"When did he say that?" Biff asked.

"...March?" Azriel replied.

Biff restrained himself from beating either himself or the angel. "Well, you're here now," he grumbled. "In my classroom. Terrifying my students." He waved his hand towards the angel. "Class, meet Azriel, former angel of death, current pain in my ass. Every dumb blond joke in the world started because of this guy."

Azriel gave him a sour look that disappeared almost immediately. "I would be happy to answer your questions," he said.

"It might have slipped your notice," Azriel said very seriously, "but Levi can be incredibly irritating. He's been given a second chance at life--the Son wants to make sure he doesn't screw it up."

Rikku hadn't quite remembered her professor's original name, no.

"Everyone deserves to live," she shrugged. "So what if someone's irritating? That's not screwing up. I mean, everybody screws up, it's the only way you get anywhere."

Azriel frowned. "No it's not."

"Of course it is." Rikku put her hands on her hips. "You can do what everybody else has always done, or you can try something new. Maybe you screw up, maybe you fail, maybe you make a mess of things, but you learned. If you never do anything different, you never learn, you never change. You're just going through the motions. What's the point of that?"

Azriel looked very confused by the question.

"Angels don't have free will," Biff explained.

"They don't?" Rikku's jaw dropped. "But that's ... that's horrible. You mean they ..."

She was staring at Azriel with a mixture of revulsion and pity.

"Pretty sure it's stupidity leaking out of him," Biff hissed.

Azriel ignored him.

"Is that why he seems kinda ... um. Not-with-it?" This was an attempt to be polite and not say 'seriously dim.' "Because he doesn't have the free will to ... realize that he could be different, or be different? Or is that a coincidence kinda thing?"
