Biff got halfway through his opening sentence of "Today we're going to talk about--" when lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone out from him, and his hair looked like a shampoo ad.

And Biff was sore annoyed.

"Azriel?"

The blonde man in the dress robes nodded his head placidly.

"I'm kind of in the middle of something," Biff said testily.

Azriel looked confused. It was not an uncommon expression for him. "The Son said to see you immediately."

"When did he say that?" Biff asked.

"...March?" Azriel replied.

Biff restrained himself from beating either himself or the angel. "Well, you're here now," he grumbled. "In my classroom. Terrifying my students." He waved his hand towards the angel. "Class, meet Azriel, former angel of death, current pain in my ass. Every dumb blond joke in the world started because of this guy."

Azriel gave him a sour look that disappeared almost immediately. "I would be happy to answer your questions," he said.

"I'm watching him because the Son told me to, Azriel replied. He wasn't long on imagination. "And I'd rather be doing anything else. Cleaning my closets. Playing a harp. Eating white cake."

"What would be more angel-like?" Azriel asked.

Inara shrugged, "Well, what did you do as the Angel of Death?"

"I was the last thing people saw before they died," Azriel said, smiling. "It was a good job."

"Why? I would think that would be horrible!"

"I got to travel and meet a lot of people," Azriel the clueless said.

"And kill them," Inara said, trying not to sound as horrified as she suddenly felt. "Didn't that bother you?"

"Sometimes they were behind on their paperwork," Azriel said, "so I let them live."

Behind him, Biff was hiding his face in his hands.

Inara glanced from Biff to Azriel and back again, incredulously. "There's mandatory paperwork when you die?"

Then, after a minute of thinking, she asked, "Why does anyone do the paperwork, then, if you die afterwards?"

"He wasn't the brightest angel in the heavens," Biff said in an undertone. "Moses put off dying for a couple hundred years by saying he needed to catch up on paperwork. That's why Azriel's not the angel of death anymore."
