Interactive Religion [Tuesday, February 12]

When the students met again, they were in a room with a series of low tables and pillows to sit on.

"We're going to discuss the Tao some more today," Biff said, going from table to table as he poured out steaming cups of tea. "When Josh and I were in Afghanistan, the crazy magi there was convinced that we would eventually discover the path to immortality. Josh studied philosophy. I studied the subtle manipulation of the elements--alchemy."

He waved his hand towards the cups of tea. "Drink up."

Romeo was glaring for real, now. "I have drunk poison," he said, and the fact he did it to himself was not exactly of importance right now. "I do not appreciate tasting it again."

"Hey, me too," Biff said. "You had an antidote as well, I guess. It's not as much fun without it."

Glare, glare, glare. "If the luck to be found quickly and taken to the hospital is an antidote," Romeo said. "And I should say it was no fun at all."

Biff nodded. "This was exactly how I was taught the Tao. Except I was paralyzed for a week and my entire body was painted blue. Oh, and the concubines moved my body into amusing positions."

"A week?" Romeo was incredulous, and that was making him less angry. "I should have gone mad. How did you manage it?"

"The concubines were a little distracting," Biff said with a wink, "and then I tried to drool on things that looked important. And my best friend wasn't paralyzed, so he spent a lot of time talking to me."

"I ... see," Romeo said, rapidly coming to the conclusion that however weird his life had been, his teacher could outdo him, and so telling his story was wasted breath. "Have you plans to poison us in class again, or otherwise incapacitate us?"

"Nah," Biff said. "The Buddhist monks we'll talk about next week preferred to hit us with sticks to get us to pay attention."

He grinned. "I won't be doing that, though."

"I would prefer the sticks to the poison," Romeo said, beginning to smile in spite of the fact he was still blue. "I have a chance against sticks."

Biff smiled again. "Maybe. These monks were scary fast."

"But it is still easier to win a fight than to stave off poison," Romeo countered. "Though, if you are not going to hit us, it matters little."

"I've been told hitting is bad," Biff said, sounding a little disappointed.

"I would think that would depend on to what end it is used," Romeo, who may have been a little fuzzy on that whole "turn the other cheek" thing, said. "Hitting for no purpose, or a bad purpose, is bad, perhaps."

"You learn not to get hit again," Biff said, nodding wisely.

"And, when it is needed, to hit back," Romeo confirmed.

"And then back into the lotus position looking like you've never moved," Biff said, winking.

"That would be a class worth attending," Romeo almost laughed, his rage seemingly forgotten. "So, I will see you next week? Hopefully not still blue."

"It shouldn't last that long," Biff said, laughing.

"All the better," Romeo said, and nodded a goodbye to the teacher.

He was still mad about being poisoned, but either way, it was over.
