Applied Inventiontronics, Perid 4 - Week 6

Glitch was at the front of the class again today, and on each desk were a few sheets of clean, un-lined paper and two pencils.

"Today, you're going to be working on the look of your inventions. For the first half of the class, I want you to sketch out a design. It doesn't have to be too detailed, but, the idea is that you'll get a feel for how it will all come together and look when it's done. Remember things like functionality and overall aesthetic appeal."

He smiled reassuringly at them, because this next part he was afraid they wouldn't really like.

"The second half of class, you'll be showing your sketches to your classmates and critiquing each other." There was a stern look before he continued with, "Nicely, please."

A moment, then, as he looked at them a bit expectantly before he realized he hadn't told them yet to begin.

"Oh, uhm, right. Go ahead. Begin!"

Liir had been working on sketches for weeks now, so it was more a matter of refinement than anything for him. As such, he had a little time to smile over at Andrew.

Thanks to A.J., Andrew literally had an entire notebook full of design sketches. He had made a few tweaks here and there as his research progressed, but he didn't feel like he had much to do right now.

So as soon as he saw Liir look his way, he snuck over and took a seat next to him.

"Hi," he whispered.

He wished he could lean against Andrew.

"Missed you," he said in place of a greeting.

And that made Andrew smile so large, he felt the need to cover his mouth to not draw attention.

"I missed you, too," he replied. "It's not nearly as fun waking up when you're not there."

"Same here," he admitted. After all, he had the bloody dreams no matter where he was and at least when they were terrible, he could reach out and wrap around Andrew and they were easier to dismiss.

"Would you mind me staying over tonight?" he asked, feeling a little badly that Andrew kept having to host.

"I was going to ask if you would," he said.

He didn't want to admit that he had kept waking up last night and reaching out for Liir. He had eventually wound up twisting up his comforter into something roughly Liir shaped, and wrapping his arms around that to fall back asleep.

"Always," he said before reaching between the desks for his hand.

"I just don't want to impose."

He looked at Andrew for a moment, then at Professor Ambrose at the front of the class.

"I have to talk to him after class for... a minute. But, um, I did have a question, considering."

[identity profile] wannabe-pan.livejournal.com 2008-02-11 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Andrew squeezed his hand. "I really hope you know that you're never going to be an imposition. In any way. Ever. Really."

He leaned in closer. "Do you want to ask me now?"

He nodded.

"Just, er, if you'd care to go to the dance. The one for the holiday." He offered a smile.

"I was considering buying tickets, but I didn't want to until I knew you wanted to. I don't dance much, but I'm not half bad. And it seems to be a holiday for, um."

He gave Andrew's hand a squeeze and ran his thumb over the skin of his wrist in a light circle.

Bridge grabs the paper and a pencil and begins working on sketching something that sort of resembles a pair of sunglasses.

Sokka still wasn't sure what he actually wanted to invent for the class, so he sketched out a detailed schematic (http://screenshots.avatarspiritmedia.net/310/120.jpg) adapting the submarine from The Search for Orange November into something that could be powered by waterbenders.

Anders was kind of really bad at drawing anything that wasn't a diagram in a playbook or regulation-size court/field schematics to scale, but his tongue was poking out of the corner of his mouth as he scribbled away at something that looked (at least in his head) like a remote-control steampunk espresso machine.

Honestly, if drawings sounded like anything, this one would sound like a riotous cacaphony of random scribbles.

And that would be A.J.'s forehead against the desk, occasionally with a few light clunks. How the hell was he going to sketch something he still hadn't thought of yet? Maybe having a near sketchbook full of designs for other people's projects might count toward something...

Rikku tried some sketches, and then balled them up and threw them away. Rinse. Repeat.

Most people wouldn't be able to sketch so easily while wearing armored gauntlets.

Doom was better than most people.

And the flight boots he was sketching were better than most forms of flight boots.

At one point Jaina blantantly looked to see what he was working on. "The old ones just not working for you?" she asked dryly.

"I have greater technologies available here than I did when I invented my current boots," Doom said. "The design can be improved enough that it's worth my time to use them for this class."

"Wow, there's nothing like knowing the technology here helps you out more," she said, glaring. "Remind me why we didn't kill you again?"

Subtle, Jaina.

"I was defeated and without adequate defense," Doom said. His voice seemed to perk up slightly as he continued, "If you had murdered me in cold blood at that point, you would be even worse than what you believe me to be."

"Details," she shrugged, and lowered her voice so as not to be overheard. "Make no mistake, if I ever hear about you doing anything like that again- family, friends, random strangers, small animals, I don't care- there's not a part of me that would consider it being in cold blood."

He wouldn't take her threat seriously and she knew it, but it made her feel better.

"What if I were protecting myself from a foolish boyfriend who chose to insert himself into a situation that does not concern him because he believes he can accomplish something?" Doom asked. "If this happened, surely I would be allowed to defend myself."

Doom liked his threat better. It was relatively subtle.

"First, you tried to take on four Jedi by yourself. I don't believe for a second that you'd actually consider anything less 'self-defense'. Second, that's not something for you to worry about." No, she didn't know that for sure.

Re: First half of class (2/11)

[identity profile] honoraryphd.livejournal.com 2008-02-12 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
"See to it that I don't," Doom said. "It would be a disgrace to force the local authorities to determine what may or may not be considered 'self-defense' in their eyes."
