How to Survive Your Own Cooking [Class 4]

"The business of the day is stew," Lulu began. "Most stews are thickened with flour, or occasionally corn starch; this recipe is one I prefer, in which the barley, and to a lesser extent the rice and lentils, thicken the stew on their own. Stews usually take much longer to make than would be available in a class period -- so, instead, thanks to some interesting functions I found here in the home ec lab la la handwavy Fandom magic la la, each cooking phase, which normally takes 25 minutes for this particular recipe, will instead take only 7. This should give you plenty of time to complete the stew during this class period."

Lulu went over the recipe, explaining what each of the different terms -- such as 'simmer' -- meant. "Also," she said, "you will be making biscuits to go along with the stew. Everything you need is available at your stations. Please, pair up -- again, with a new partner, someone you haven't yet worked with -- and go to your stations."

Demyx looked nervously over at Cassandra (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomhigh/1671878.html?thread=102430150#t102430150), hoping she knew what they were supposed to be doing. "So. Uh. Throw stuff in a pot and put it on heat? I can do that. I think. Probably." This called for serious note-consulting.

"Water first," she nodded.

Huh... this teaching stuff was easy.

"Water? Water I can do!" Demyx bounced on the balls of his feet, holding his hand over the pot. Water coalesced in the bottom of the pot and filled to the proper line. "There. Next!"

"Boil it?"

Wait... that wasn't supposed to be a question.

"That...I can't do. I'm a water user, not fire." Axel could have done it. But Demyx was avoiding that train of thought still. "....You do it." He wasn't refusing to touch the stove. Why would anyone think that?

"Just turn on the stove then."

Of course she knew how to use the stove. Who didn't know how to do that?

"No way!" Demyx stepped back so Cassandra was closer to it. "You do it." There were turny-buttons that did things. Demyx still didn't want to touch them.

"I'm trying to teach you," she pointed out, stepping back herself. "The best way to do that is to let you practice."

"The best way to do that is to show me," Demyx challenged, flailing just a little bit.

"Fine," she said flatly and stepped forward. Then, keeping herself between Demyx and the stove, she fiddled with some knobs and then turned them back to their original settings and stepped back.

"No you try."

Demyx was just gullible enough to fall for it, but that didn't stop him from flailing. "But I'll light myself on fire. Again!" He edged back toward the stove nervously.

"But you can just put yourself out again with the water thing," Cassandra pointed out.

Because that would make it totally less painful.

"But...I don't like burning!" Demyx squirmed, poking the knobs. Of course, turning the one with the numbers to the biggest number had to be the best way to do it. It would go quicker, that way. Right?

That was precisely the way Cassandra did things. She was so proud of her brilliant student. "It'd just be a little fire." Probably.

Demyx spazzed, shaking the sleeves of his coat to make sure he wasn't on fire and backing away quickly from the stove.

"Okay."

"What do you think we should do now?" Cassandra asks, trying to sound like it's a teaching question that she already knows the answer to and that she's just testing him.

"Um. Make stew?" Demyx fidgetted.

"Yes, but what's the next step?" she chided. Not that she actually knew.

"I don't know?" Demyx dug out his notes again.

"'If the subject fails to'-- no, no, wrong notes." Demyx shoved the paper in his pocket again, searching for his class notes.

Cassandra would offer him hers... if she had any. Instead she adopted a patient pose and waited... very casually.

Demyx patted himself down completely, coming up empty. "...I lost them."

[identity profile] iseewhatyoumean.livejournal.com 2008-01-31 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
"Well then," Cassandra tried to sound like an exasperated teacher. She didn't do a very good job. "In that case, what do you think should come next?"

Re: Assignment: Stew and Biscuits [Class 4]

[identity profile] electric-sitar.livejournal.com 2008-01-31 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
"Stuff?" Demyx suggested. It was a brilliant suggestion!

[identity profile] iseewhatyoumean.livejournal.com 2008-01-31 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
"Well then... get to it!" she said with an utterly straight face. Do stuff, Demyx. Do stuff!

Re: Assignment: Stew and Biscuits [Class 4]

[identity profile] electric-sitar.livejournal.com 2008-01-31 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
"...Get to what?" Demyx shifted from foot to foot. "I guess we're waiting? How about music?" He pulled his sitar out of the air, playing a few notes.
