How to Survive Your Own Cooking [Class 4]

"The business of the day is stew," Lulu began. "Most stews are thickened with flour, or occasionally corn starch; this recipe is one I prefer, in which the barley, and to a lesser extent the rice and lentils, thicken the stew on their own. Stews usually take much longer to make than would be available in a class period -- so, instead, thanks to some interesting functions I found here in the home ec lab la la handwavy Fandom magic la la, each cooking phase, which normally takes 25 minutes for this particular recipe, will instead take only 7. This should give you plenty of time to complete the stew during this class period."

Lulu went over the recipe, explaining what each of the different terms -- such as 'simmer' -- meant. "Also," she said, "you will be making biscuits to go along with the stew. Everything you need is available at your stations. Please, pair up -- again, with a new partner, someone you haven't yet worked with -- and go to your stations."

"But...I don't like burning!" Demyx squirmed, poking the knobs. Of course, turning the one with the numbers to the biggest number had to be the best way to do it. It would go quicker, that way. Right?

That was precisely the way Cassandra did things. She was so proud of her brilliant student. "It'd just be a little fire." Probably.

Demyx spazzed, shaking the sleeves of his coat to make sure he wasn't on fire and backing away quickly from the stove.

"Okay."

"What do you think we should do now?" Cassandra asks, trying to sound like it's a teaching question that she already knows the answer to and that she's just testing him.

"Um. Make stew?" Demyx fidgetted.

"Yes, but what's the next step?" she chided. Not that she actually knew.

"I don't know?" Demyx dug out his notes again.

"'If the subject fails to'-- no, no, wrong notes." Demyx shoved the paper in his pocket again, searching for his class notes.

Cassandra would offer him hers... if she had any. Instead she adopted a patient pose and waited... very casually.

Demyx patted himself down completely, coming up empty. "...I lost them."

"Well then," Cassandra tried to sound like an exasperated teacher. She didn't do a very good job. "In that case, what do you think should come next?"

"Stuff?" Demyx suggested. It was a brilliant suggestion!

"Well then... get to it!" she said with an utterly straight face. Do stuff, Demyx. Do stuff!

"...Get to what?" Demyx shifted from foot to foot. "I guess we're waiting? How about music?" He pulled his sitar out of the air, playing a few notes.

Cassandra looked back and forth between the sitar to the pot on the stove for nearly a minute as if waiting for something to happen.

"It's not working," she eventually decided.

"I can't make water boil. I can make it disappear, though?" Demyx kept playing. It was something for him to do, at least.

"The water isn't supposed to disappear," Cassandra pointed out. "It's supposed to make stew. And you're supposed to help it." With the implication that 'and you aren't helping' hopefully clear.

"Me? I can't. I give up." Demyx smiled sheepishly. "All yours."

"You can't give up." If Cassandra used words to communicate more often she'd probably sound desperate. As it was she sounded ever so slightly agitated.

"I give up a lot, actually. I'm dead." Demyx was...much too cheerful about this.

Cassandra blinked in confusion and reached out to poke him. "Don't look dead."

Unnoticed on the stove the water bubbled furiously in the pot.

"Nope! I'm totally dead, but I'm somehow alive again. I'm not questioning it. I was already a Nobody to begin with, but I'm guessing I get a second chance or something? I don't understand it." Demyx shrugged happily. "I like it here."

The water was starting to climb up the sides of the pot, and over. But Demyx was far too interested in his own life - or death - story to care.

"I was dead once. I got better," she told him totally canon too; oh comics, don't ever change. They had so much in common!

"Nice! Someone who doesn't freak out!" Demyx jumped up in the air in a rock star move.

As he leaped Cassandra glanced over and realized that not only was the water boiling, but that it had been for quite some time. Not only had it run over the sides of the pot, but it had run down the side of the stove too. There was now a sizable puddle spreading across the floor... right under Demyx's feet.

You know that moment when disaster strikes and time seems to slow down? That's what Cassandra was experiencing as her eyes widened and she lurched forward to save Demyx.

She was fast. Really fast. But her weight was distributed wrong and even as she lunged she knew she would be too late.

Demyx just saw Cassandra lunging at him, which instilled terror in what passed for his heart. "Eep!"

Demyx only managed an undignified squeak before Cassandra slammed into him and his boots hit the puddle at the same time. The pile they ended up as was even more completely undignified than Demyx's girly squeak of fear.

"...Ow..."
