Library; Wednesday [ 01/23 ]

Open the library. Y'rar, bileht nepo. Something weren't as good backward, but Y'rar, bileht desolc wasn't much better and it might be too early in the day for her to effectively get away with that, anyway. She had books, though, and she had a relatively comfortable chair at a nice, big desk. There were no bottles of prescriptions, though, that she could make lists out of horrible side effects from, and then write backwards, which just meant that she'd have to make up her own horrible side effects, list them neatly, and then slide them into the books before putting them in the pile of books to be put away. It was only her duty, as a doctor, to warn people that excessive readings of King of the Bracelets may cause frequent, contagious bouts of being hopelessly ostracized, and that these books on religions are likely to get you an unscratchable, burnable rash; if untreated, it could be crippling, much like a leper.

Cain: a maniac. One of the books to be shelved stayed behind, a small monograph on the devious figures of the Bible. Adah had to admit enough intrigue that she kept it behind to read, thus risking her own claim of damnation in the form of herpes-esque boils around the mouth and really bad corns on the feet. Dammit, I'm mad.

It was Wednesday, and River showed up as usual. Quietly approaching the desk, she was testing how long it would take for Adah to notice her arrival. Books were distracting, she knew, but so could she be on occasion.

Should Bob show up she could always mention blonde wigs.

Even if River couldn't read her mind, she would probably be able to tell in subtle reactions on her face that she'd noticed River there about halfway in the other girl's journey from door to desk. She didn't look up from Jezebel, Lebezej, who, really, was terribly overrated, but there was a slight shifting that included River in the corner of her eye, a slight lift of her eyebrow in awareness. Tiny things. Barely noticeable things, unless you were one to notice them, and she decidedly tried to pretend, the utter futile masquerade, that she hadn't noticed anything, and was calmly waiting for the book to just get to the damn defenestration.

No, pretending didn't work, but River found the attempt sweet. When she reached the desk she leaned forward, close to Adah, so that her hair draped across the pages. Hopefully that would distract. Hopefully not in a way that made Adah annoyed.

Adah leaned back a little, a slight straightening but barely, and blew a puff of air toward the hair over her pages, and smirked. Really, now, River. She was trying to read about murdering whore who got thrown out of windows by servants, here.

River watched her hair move through the force of Adah's breath. "Maybe someone could have caught her when she fell," River said, leaning close to give Adah a kiss.

Adah grinned as she, still pretending to be absent and aloof, lifted her chin to receive the kiss and lightly return it. It was from the top chamber of a palace tower; anyone who would have tried could have been crushed underneath Jezebel's velocity and her big, fat butt. She was an aristocratic whore, after all, so she would have been very well fed.

"Could have caught her mid-air in a ship," River persisted, and then, trying to reveal the aloofness for what it was, she leaned even closer and blew a breath into Adah's ear.

Damn her. Even if Adah had tried to keep still, she knew she would be victim to her body overpowering her mind in lieu of something like a breath in her ear. She twitched, head first, turning sharply toward River, and then shoulder, lifting as though to defend the ear, as though the two parts had ever been friends or as if the ear would ever do something similar for the shoulder, which it wouldn't. And, slowly, also a bit despite herself, a grin surfaced as her eyes settled accusingly at River and her dirty tricks and she pointedly insisted that, if they had ships that could have done that, well, then, they certain didn't record anything about it in any of the history, and the servants would have tried to stone it down.

"Tried to brun me as a witch once, but I was saved by people with a spaceship." She kissed Adah's cheek, clearly pleased at her reaction. "And guns."

Aw, now, see, a good old stake burning. Maybe that was what was missing in Nathan's repertoire of ways to convert the jungle heathens. Adah grinned a little wryly, shifting to lean her head into making the kiss on the cheek easier, as she noted that River definitely did seem to make it out better than Jezebel, yes, which is probably why, if a Bible were being written today, she'd most likely be left out of it, like Lilith, and the thirteenth apostle.

"Read the Bible. Inconsistent and contradictory. I attempted to fix it and it turned to paper. Shepherd Book claimed it was a symbol rather than a book." She slipped up on the the desk and sat down cross-legged. "The invisible parts are more interesting."

Adah nodded her head; she remembered River mentioning that before, and it amused her greatly. Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counselors there is safety. Safety, not wisdom, or joy, or love. Safety. The Book of Proverbs, by the way, chapter eleven, verse fourteen. That was the problem with a symbol: everyone could look at the same symbol, and everyone could see something entirely different. One sees liberation, another shackles. One sees hope, the other devastation. It turns one blind, it opens another's eyes to light. It made Adah sigh slightly, looking at River's knee. She did like, she had to admit, some of the stories of the Bible, even if she didn't like some of the messages. Her sisters, Leah, Rachel, Ruth (with the trailing addition of another name, May, month of spring and blossoms, as if, like her younger years separated her, Orleanna had been trying to separate her from the legacy)...they had all the interesting stories. Smiling wryly, Adah always wondered why she got the throwaway one, remaining mostly invisible by basic Sunday school classes as just another wife, nameless more often than not.

"Safety, saved, salvation." River leaned forward to kiss Adah lightly again. Her eyes had been trapped by the shape of her lips as her mind spoke the words. "Adah the hidden one. Another left out story. Could find it." She spoke softly against Adah's lips.

Adah (an Ornament, unsurprising when considering the source and legacy, or the Dawn, which didn't make nearly as much sense, in Hebrew) closed her eyes as she lightly returned the kiss, in the languidly lazy fashion of her rolling, lazy thoughts. She had at least been the first wives of random Biblical men (The first shall be last), and one was a decedent of Cain (Cain: A Maniac). She was probably more that one than the approved wife of Esau, who married those dirty Canaanites like the first namesake. Definitely, she thought as she pressed another slow kiss into River's lips, definitely a Canaanite herself.

River chuckled. "A preference for Canaanites over Hebrews?" she asked, one hand reaching out to play with a strand of Adah's hair.

Adah nodded, slightly, to not disturb the paths of River's straying fingers. They were the rebels, the devils, the traders, merchants, and travelers. Destroyed, but not conquered, in the services more often of Baal, whose name tickled the folds of Adah's brain pleasantly, Laab, rather than Yahweh. A false god (but weren't they all?), a god of nature, celebrated typical with great...her eyes shifted significantly at River through the hair...sensuality. Master, lord, a root of the common Beelzebub used to refer to the devil, to Satan.

She gave a wry, smart smile. She read....way too much.

Of course, the thought of those celebrations had made River's thoughts turn away from the Bible, and that smile was pushing her in a similar direction. Spinning one of Adah's curls around her fingers, River tilted her head. "And you have studied those acts of worship to Baal in detail?" she asked teasingly.

Adah grinned. Not in great detail, no. It was a little difficult for a small town preacher's daughter to get her hand on those kind of materials, truth be told.

"So lack of knowledge is only due to lack of books on the subject?" River giggled and leaned forward for another kiss.

[Bedtime, woe!]

Adah smirked lightly, and gave River what she seemed to be looking for with coming closer, briefly, fleetingly, playfully. Not only lack of books, but also the lack of knowing any true practitioners these days.

That was certainly what River wanted. Her fingers released Adah's strand of hair and ran down her arm instead. "Assume Fandom might be the place to meet them. Interdimensional travel is rare."

Not only rare, but technically, supposedly, impossible, but so were a lot of things in Adah's life that showed up and announced themselves as entirely happening and there was nothing anyone could do about it. Her eyes closed, head lolling toward the shoulder of the arm where River's fingers were traveling, fighting off a shiver that wanted to rush, like a pulse, up her spine. She didn't need inter dimensional travel so much; a simple time machine would do. And then she could squish a beetle, and change the future.

"And what part of the future would you change?" River asked, ignoring the dangers of that pursuit. She leaned close again and placed a kiss against Adah's arm.

Well, she wouldn't know, would she? Adah smiled lightly at the top of River's head. You can't determine how one squished bug, gub dehsiuqs eno, would change things. So much depends upon a red wheel barrow glazed with rain water beside the white chickens. But what would happen if the wheel barrow were blue, or if the rain water were wiped away, or if the chickens were killed that day for dinner? Or was that the point, and that was their destiny all along?
