Driver's Ed [Wednesday, Period Four]

Today, the Dangershop was set to simulate a garage with a number of workstations. The Bentley was back, this time up on a ramp while Bond worked on the undercarriage. "Good afternoon class," he addressed them, wiping grease off his hands with a rag. "Now that I've got some idea of your driving skills, today we're going to be going over cars themselves."

After giving a short lecture on cars and their history, Bond continued. "Now you'll find a number of handouts describing the various systems and components that make up a car, and we'll be going into more detail on them later in the semester, but for this class we'll be focusing on three systems in particular, the engine, a manual transmission, and most importantly, brake systems."

Bond gestured around the room. "I've marked the places in the handouts pertaining to these systems, and set up each of these workstations around the room with an example of each of the three, and I want you to divide into groups of two or three to examine them and get a feel for them. If ou feel the need to take them apart, there are tools provided."

Amber closed her eyes because she thought this might help and thought about something fun.

Her tap shoes!

...but then that lead to her thinking about her ma shoving them down her panties to save them when their trailer exploded. That wasn't such a good thought.

She just concentrated on her shoes and dancing and that was it.

Peter concentrated and tried to hear whatever Amber was thinking. After a few moments he thought he got a flash.

"Tap shoes?" he guessed. He'd assume any other parts about underwear were his own weird teenaged brain.

"Yes!" she clapped her hands together and bounced. "That's it exactly! Was it too easy?"

Peter found himself smiling at her excitement. "I don't know? The mind reading's not one I've practiced a lot. I'm not sure what makes it easy or hard."

"Kind of like an invasion of privacy uh? If people don't know. I'm just sayin' now you can practice on me any time you want. I don't have many secrets," she said.

"I would try to tell you first," Peter said. "I don't like to pry. I know I wouldn't want someone doing it to me."

"That's nice of you," Amber smiled at him. "What about the TK? Could you say..." she looked around, at the car they were currently supposed to be studying. "...check the oil without touchin' anythin'?"

Peter looked at the inside of the car again. "Possibly? I haven't tried something like that before. I could give it a go though. It'd be good practice."

"I can give you a jump start if you like?" she looked at him, arching a brow. "I'm buggin' you aren't I? Makin' you do all sorts of stuff. It's not that I don't believe you; I'm just curious is all."

"Nah, it's fine," Peter said, smiling at her. "Besides, I owe you, remember? And sometime I'll bug you with tons of questions about being a beauty queen."

She looked down, grinning. "Ah, it ain't all that special. Trust me. The dancin' is my most favorite part. Guess I'll be stickin' to the common rooms from now on, if I want to do any of that." Oh she could carry on and on about dancing. "Now, how about you show me how to check the oil on a car. Hands free?" Amber said with a wide grin.

"I accept your challenge," Peter said. He extended his hand towards the dipstick handle not dirty but stayed far back enough that he wasn't touching it. He concentrated and tried to picture taking it out in a slow, controlled fashion. It started a bit jerky, but with quick movement on his part he was able to leave it hovering above the engine. "There? How's that?"

Amber was squeeing by the time the dipstick came out so not dirty, that she bounced and reached out to tentatively touch the handle. "You're brilliant! I bet you could drive without ever havin' to touch the wheel!"

"Possibly," Peter said. He brought the dipstick holder over so he could hold it properly still not dirty. "Not this class though. I'm betting the teacher wouldn't appreciate it."

"Most likely not," she agreed. "Guess you wouldn't be learnin' much that way. But still, this is way cool. Here... let me get a cloth..." Amber handwavily found a paper towel and handed it to Peter so he could wipe the dipstick off yep, no dirty here. "I think you stick it back in after that and pull it back out, checkin' the fluid to see if it needs more." and so done with the not dirty.

"I think trying that with my powers is a good way to get us both covered with oil," Peter said. "Mind if we go the old fashioned way?"

Peter smiled, finding her accent to be kind of cute. "You wanna try this part?"

"Okay," she said. "Can't be too hard, can it? Can I hold the dipstick, please?"

Peter handed it over. "Here you go. I've got your back in case something goes wrong."

She chuckled and scrunched up her shoulders. "Hopefully nothin' will seein's how you just poke it in." Amber leaned over the car slightly and pushed the dipstick into it's slot, making sure it was all the way in to get an accurate reading on the oil level. She glanced over at Peter, grinned, and started to pull it out too fast. There was a little popping noise where the tip of the dipstick raked againt the edge on the way out, and flung back, slinging drops of oil at Amber and hopefully not Peter.

A couple of drops did land on him. Peter tried to brush them off his cheeks. He chuckled. "Now I feel better about worrying I'd do the same thing with TK."

Amber was running her hand over her cheeks as well, dragging the oil more than wiping it off. "I'm so sorry, Peter! I hope it didn't get on your clothes. Oh my gosh."
