Adah Price has a new (new to her, at any rate, because the borrowed copy seemed to have gotten at least a little bit of use at one point in time) medical book, one that was either going to make very little sense to her or would be depressingly familiar and ordinary. She didn't bother considering that it might fall somewhere in the middle. She didn't think it would be possible, all things considered. Either way, there was a new book, so the chances of productivity today were pretty much slim to none.

First Period -- 01/16

The books on the desk were organized neatly, but, despite the begging in the orderly stacks that loomed over Adah's head as she leaned into her reading, they weren't going anywhere for a while. Might as well get used it. Adah had no sympathy for the immobile; she'd spent too much time being such herself.

Second Period -- 01/16

While Adah was an exceptional reader, sometimes she did set her reading goals too high. There were a lot of interesting pages to cover, so reading turned to skimming and skimming turned quickly into...well...sketching. A notebook open to a blank page, Adah found herself just as intrigued by the words as the pictures and was carefully trying to copy them out for her own reference and retaining.

Lines on paper. River saw them in Adah's mind as she entered the room. She laughed softly, a warm and happy laugh and walked up to the desk. She leaned forward and placed her hands on the surface next to Adah's notebook for support, her hair trailing down on a page. "It was my birthday yesterday. I forgot." She did not expect Adah to get upset and attempt to bake a cake, and she liked that about her.

If the so-called librarian should show up today she had a plan for dealing with him.

He most certainly was a librarian and he was now he was doing his job.

Shelving books quietly and in a way that was not threatening.

The bruise from last week was fading, still a rather nasty color, but nowhere near as noticeable as it had once been.

River noticed it however, and the quiet shelving was oddly disturbing. But she remembered Adah's advice from last week: Be the haunter, not the haunted. Not easy though, he was like a ghost. Didn't even have a name.

Then she smiled. That last part could be fixed though. "Hello Bob," she said.

He paused slightly, resting the book in his hand on the shelf as he tilted his head just enough to catch her out of the corner of his eye.

"Miss Tam, I don't think anyone here is named Bob," He informed her kindly.

"I just named you Bob," River replied solemnly. "Can change it to Priscilla if you prefer." She could be generous, after all.

Sighing with a hint of resignation, he pushed the book into place and looked over the spine of the next one. "Only two choices?"

"Yes." There was a limit to her generosity. And already, with two potential names, his ghostly presence took on a more human shape.

Before River got herself distracted by someone who apparently knew the actual meaning of work assumingly and because I'm crazy OCD about timing, la, Adah quirked her head slightly , looking up from her sketches to give River a dubious look. Maybe it was because she shared it with someone else, or because, of the past four years, it had been punctuated with the sounds of Orleanna's sobs, but it seemed like forgetting a birthday would be rather hard to do. Interestingly, though, Adah's mind did think of cakes, or of cake mix, rather, Betty Crocker, in cardboard boxes. Better Crocker, kcorc a tahw! The powdery mixes couldn't handle the Congolese humidity, turning them into thick, dense, useless bricks that clunked heavily on the table, like the weight of Orleanna's motherhood.

They didn't hear the end of the travesty from Rachel for weeks. Adah quirked a smile with the quirk of her head, with a slight nod, a silent happy birthday, yadhtrib yppah.

Yes, before that, because Adah was more distracting. River leaned in to snatch a quick kiss which might have been a 'thank you' or a stolen birthday present. "Should have built a house out of potential cakes," she replied. "With tears for mortar."

And that, Adah settled another dubious look toward River, would have to go the way of all things poetical: it sounded nice, but was completely and entirely devoid of any practicality. They'd be shelterless after the first rain, and the sweetness of the cake mix would attract enough insects in the dry season that you wouldn't be able to see your skin for all the swarms drawn to it.

The idea seemed to interest River, however. "Food turned to house turns inhabitants edible. Walking birthday cekas for insects." She giggled, then whispered to Adah: "Will keep your suggestion regarding the librarian in mind."

Adah appeared quite content to letting the idea of solidified cake mix houses lingering in River's imagination, just so long as they stayed there. She knew...or, rather, she hoped...that she wouldn't need to let fireants start creeping along the edges of her consciousness for River to know that she wasn't entirely fond of insect swarms. Viral swarms, however...or other carriers that ate away what laid below the skin rather than the skin itself...

She let a look linger, as well, a thoughtful one, curious. She didn't exactly have any doubts that River would, but she still checked for signs of conviction in the other girl's expression.

Third Period -- 01/16

Somehow (she wasn't entirely sure how), Adah had found herself listing and categorizing various different scientific names and symptoms of the viruses she'd recently been studying. Perhaps it was the diagramming she had been doing earlier, which inspired the need to sketch more things, and, well, what better things to sketch than examples of the horrible, horrible things that little, tiny, microscopic invaders could do to you?

Lunch -- 01/16

And she has a slightly bruised Papay fruit to accompany the book that had gotten buried under her repeatable organization of microbiotic organisms, but she nibbled at it while returning to the book. That way, she could claim that she was having a rather Ozian day, as much as she might, anyway, for knowing nothing about it except a little of its bizarre science and an increasing knowledge of its medical philosophy and the fact that, apparently, princesses there looked like her (but had no limps).

Fourth Period -- 01/16

It seemed that Adah's body was working against her again. It had betrayed her for the books. Fiendish, indeed, and after all the work she'd been doing for it lately! When her left leg started to painfully fall asleep as she sat in her chair, Adah finally caved in and started to move around the shelves to put books away.

Fifth Period -- 01/16

No more sketching or ordering or sleeping legs, Adah is resolved to get through at least another chapter before closing up and probably taking a long nap.

Lee wandered in really late omg sometime after his last class and wasted no time in walking over to the desk, dropping his back at his feet and leaning across the desk.

Somehow, Adah managed to keep her expression managed into nothing but a slight smirk as she kept her eyes on her book as the Eel approached. The slumping sound of the bag on the floor, the slight leaning, and Adah lifted her eyes from the pages to meet his.

"Hello."

Adah had a better question. She quirked an eyebrow.

"Well," Adah said, straightening her shoulders...or at least attempting to, and looking at the Eel with a calm and placid look of expectation, "let's here it, then. It better be good."
