Library; Wednesday [ 01/16 ]

Adah Price has a new (new to her, at any rate, because the borrowed copy seemed to have gotten at least a little bit of use at one point in time) medical book, one that was either going to make very little sense to her or would be depressingly familiar and ordinary. She didn't bother considering that it might fall somewhere in the middle. She didn't think it would be possible, all things considered. Either way, there was a new book, so the chances of productivity today were pretty much slim to none.

Yes, Adah smirked and, to emphasize her point, she sprawled her arm out over an empty space in the desk and settled her head down against it, peeking up through her hair at River, and it was absolutely exhausting.

River leaned sideways on the desk, ending up lying down with her arm and head next to Adah's. "Know ways to make words stop and only crawling on skin remaning," she said, but of course Adah knew that.

It took a moment, with her drowsy thinking leading her down the path of fumbled notebooks and slightly bruised fruit, for Adah to pick up on exactly what River meant, but, the moment she did, her toes curled in recogniztion before a little trembling, a shadow of that crawling, crept her her leg from where the toes curled, and she grinned, lightly, teasingly accusing River of, once again, with the dancing, always the dancing, she never stopped. Never, revir, but Adah didn't mind. It was sweet (although, she told herself, mostly silly).

Tracing circles with her fingertip on Adah's hand, River looked thoughtful. "What would you think if I stopped dancing?" she asked.

Shifting her eyes slightly toward the general direction of their hands, although she was content to just feel the tracing that River was doing, Adah smiled a bit wryly. Her first impression was to think that someone would have broken River's legs, but even then, she'd still dance. So, really, the only answer to the question was that it was Unfathomable. There was no answer, just like there was no god, in the respect that it was just too unlikely to even bother considering.

"I did. I will have done in some version of the future." The light touch didn't stop. "You we're in a coma. For a short time some of us were twenty years older. I had stopped dancing."

Adah frowned slightly, looking toward River. She wasn't sure she understood what she was talking about. Of course, apparently, whatever it was, it had happened while Adah was out. Twenty years older?

River nodded in confirmation. "Told Cassandra I had stopped dancing." Her own memories of herself were vague now, but what she had said and done remained clear. "I stopped by to see you."

Adah gave a soft, silent snort. A whole lot of good that did, she imagined. She was still, admittedly, having trouble grasping the concept of River being aware of herself in twenty years. What would Adah see if she got to look head a couple of decades? Where would she be? Wasn't retaining that sort of knowledge going against about a strong handful of science-fiction laws, thus causing world collapse and space-time rifts?

River shrugged. "The world as we know it still exists." She smiled again, the thought of a life of not-dancing fading a little as she watched light catching Adah's hair. "You were quiet." She stretched her head forward a little to kiss Adah lightly, happy that she wasn't quiet now.

Adah's neck stretched, although just a little, to be a bit more accommodating to the reach of River's kiss, idly commenting that of course she was quiet. She was completely braindead. Utterly silence in the type of noise that River reveled in, although, really, she thought her that other important organ, her heart, had made up for it with an almost thunderous effort to work in stay to keep things going. Her body, like it occasionally would in painful twitches and slight collapses, got tired of trying to raise above the boisterousness of her brain,.

River chuckled and gave her another kiss. "Could stop by some day and I'd try and make the thoughts go quiet and the heard speed up for a moment," she said quietly. "Better than braindead."

Adah grinned. One track mind, the immovable River. Better than braindead, yes, River was correct there, but it barely made the thoughts go quiet, and it was another sort of death besides. Adah was well versed in French, after all, and the concept of la petite mort, the small death. Her fingers started brushing lightly against River's, gazing over at her, their forms slumped against the desk in vaguely reversed shapes.

"Just a suggestion." River grinned back at Adah. "Different kinds of death, just like different kinds of dancing."

Suggestion, noitseggus, No, it's egg, us. Lazily, Adah smiled again. Just as she was never particularly opposed to River's suggestions of alternate methods of dancing, she probably wouldn't put up too much of a struggle against other forms of death, either.

"Not too much of a struggle." River giggled then leaned in to kiss Adah again, deeper and longer this time. The books wouldn't gossip, after all.

True to River's words, Adah grinned into the kiss, and wondered if River realized that those words were just asking for the struggle they discredited.

"But if you struggle, should I stop?" River asked, the words whispered against Adah's lips. Squirrels could gossip after all.

Adah had a better question. Would she stop?

"Would stop if you wanted me to more than you didn't want me to," River replied quietly, slipping an arm around Adah, and letting her fingers walk over the fabric of her clothes.

Adah's own fingers danced a little against River's that were still at her hand. It certainly was like she worried that River wouldn't be able to really tell.

"Libraries might be too public, though," River mumbled, this time against Adah's hair, although the world around them was quickly starting to fade.

Other places, other times. Semi treht o, secal preht o. There was a slight shifting of Adah's arm, her right arm, with her attention shifted slightly toward it. She was trying to get it to move, trying to bring her hand toward River's head close to hers, to have her fingers dancing in the other girl's hair like her left handed fingers were dancing against her fingers. But it wouldn't move, not beyond a weak, heavy sort of shifting. The thoughts, she knew...hoped...would still suffice. It's the thought that counts.

"Other places, other times," River agreed. "Stop by when you want to." She blew air lightly at Adah's cheek. "Thoughts do count." Especially for River.

Nose wrinkling and grin growing at the gentle breath of warm air against her cheek, like wind, like sighing, Adah almost sighed herself as she let the thoughts of a working, dependable right hand get tangled in the strands of River's hair. All those stairs, she thought, teasingly, as she probably always would. Better make it worth it.
